Course objectives
The course is designed so as to enhance nurse´s general qualifications while oriented toward the application of animal-assisted therapy in clinical practice. The students will acquire skills in canine therapy and other animal-based therapies in client care. The students will develop competence and knowledge necessary for safe practice in meeting client/patient individual needs. They will learn to handle their dog therapy animal, deliver dog therapy in both an individual and a group forms and discern the needs of their therapy pet to be able to comply. Also, the students will enhance their team work skills.
Syllabus
  • 1. Animal-assisted therapy: utilization of various animal species in care and treatment
    2. History of dog therapy and the human-dog relationship
    3. Current dog therapy - utility, indications, canine therapy associations in the Czech Republic, veterinary regulations (vaccination, vet check-up, deworming)
    4. Dog training examinations, dog instruction, trainer instruction
    5. Dog as a family pet
    6. Implementation of canine therapy in mentally handicapped child care and in children with multiple conditions
    7. Implementation of canine therapy in the physically impaired
    8. Benefits of canine therapy in the elderly
    9. Positioning and the dog as a participant
    10. Implementation of canine therapy in clients with sensory impairments
    11. Practical demonstrations of individual and collective canine therapy in a child care centre
    12. Practical demonstrations of canine therapy in a nursing home
    13. Hippotherapy
    14. Other types of animal assisted therapy: feline therapy, etc.
