Course objectives
The course should briefly introduce the elementary division of the discipline and mechanicals of functioning international relations. Next to understanding the principles of international politics, sense of existence and historical development of international (supranational) organizations and application of international law, the students should orientate in common concepts and understand key modern changes which have been the result of development of international relations. The course is dedicated also to involvement of Czechoslovakia in international relations in the 20th century.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction of the issue, characteristics of international relations in modern European history
    2. International relations in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century, causes if World War I, position of Czechs and Slovaks in years before World War I
    3. Versailles Treaty and implementation of new international relations in Europe, League of Nations, issue of newly formed Czechoslovakia and so called successor states, foreign policy of Czechoslovakia
    4. Crisis of international system at the beginning of the 30´s, end of French hegemony, policy of appeasement, rise of European fascism, way of Czechoslovakia to Munich 1938
    5. Global character of World War II and role of superpower conferences in creation of post-war international relations. Policy of Czechoslovak exile in years of war, foundation of UN
    6. Formation of Soviet block in Europe and role of Truman doctrine, Marshall plan in creation of post-war Europe. Position of Czechoslovakia in post-war Europe
    7. Cold war and its reflexion in international relations. Dominance of bipolar system at the turn of the 40´s and the 50´s. Participation of Czechoslovakia on international scene at the turn of the 40´s and the 50´s.
    8. New quality of international relations in western Europe after 1945 and journey to European integration. Establishment of totalitarian system of Soviet type in Czechoslovakia and mechanical of power.
    9. Period of strategy of nuclear age and transformations in characteristics of international relations. Attempt to reform the totalitarian system in Czechoslovakia in 1968, so called Brezhnev Doctrine.
    10. Destruction of Soviet block and establishment of new international relations. Changes on map of Europe and world, new quality of international relations.

Written test aimed at testing theoretical knowledge in the area of international relations and orientation in history of European relations with regard to Czechoslovak participation and involvement in European history of the 20th century.
