Course objectives
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with operation principles of the most important medical devices in nursing as well as related legislative regulations. The course describes biophysical and technical principles which are used in medical devices in nursing practice. Having finished the course, the students shall know principles of technical processing of physiological values and signals and possibilities of their displaying. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students will gain and demonstrate basic knowledge of important groups of medical devices in nursing practice. They will acquaint themselves with applications in specific fields of medicine and in specific hospital wards/departments. Professional skills: The students are able to connect a measuring system to a patient, taking minimizing of unwanted infringement into account. General ability: The students are able to describe and explain work of diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices. They know applicable legislative regulations arising form the act on medical devices. Competence: They can set up monitoring systems for a specific patient. They assemble systems of measuring devices. They organize safety and technical inspections of the devices.

  • 1. Legislation, classification and technical standardization of medical devices.
    2. Bio-electric signals, signal processing. Issues of sensor - patient connection.
    3. Instrumentation is surgery.
    4. Instrumentation in cardiology.
    5. Instrumentation in neurology and audiology.
    6. Instrumentation in radiology.
    7. Instrumentation in physiotherapy.
    8. Instrumentation for anaesthesia and resuscitation.
    9. Organ replacements.

Credit requirements: Attendance of 100 % of seminars is required for completion. Students who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks.
