Course objectives
The course is conceived as a theoretical and practical unit. The students will be acquainted with the most important general characteristics of microorganisms. The course will provide a basic structure of knowledge of bacteriology, virology, parasitology and mycology. The students will be acquainted with principles of occupational safety at hazardous workplaces, they will acquire detailed knowledge of principles of collect sampling and dispatching of infectious material, they will be acquainted with the most important laboratory microbiological examination methods.
Syllabus
  • 1. Position of medical microbiology, infection medicine and immunology in the human health system. Legislative standards and legal provisions related to protection against infection spreading.
    2. Macroorganism and microorganism relations and their importance for preservation of human health or for development of a disease.
    3. Important human bacterial agents.
    4. Important human viral agents.
    5. Characteristics and classification of infections by their causes. Hospital infections.
    6. Viral hepatitis types and other viral diseases and their importance in medicine.
    7. Estimation of risk rate of viral agents effects on the health of human population.
    8. Nosocomial infections in nursing, hazards to patients and to medical staff.
    9. Main sources of spreading of viral agents in hospital facilities and institutions providing care for people.
    10. Fundamentals of immunology and immunoprevention.
    11. Development of infectious diseases. Importance of immunology and immunosuppression to healthy and diseased population.
    12. Prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. Prevention of viral hepatitis.
    13.Prevention of transmission of nosocomial infections. Measures at occurrence of nosocomial infections. Prevention of viral diseases. Prevention of diarrheal diseases. Prevention of infectious diseases transmitted by ticks.

Teacher's information
The contact instruction is implemented through the system of tutorials on selected topics. The combined part of the studies is implemented in the e-learning course environment at e-portal http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. The students have study supports including correspondence tasks available for instruction there. The course is concluded by a credit in written form; within it, the student will demonstrate knowledge of basic and recommended reading and be able to discuss the processed correspondence tasks. The student will have the opportunity to consult individually the topics studied, through individual or group tutorials or electronic mail.
The credit is conditioned by a minimum of 80% attendance at lessons. Independent preparation based on studying of recommended reading will be continuously checked within individual tutorials.
Exam: written test, cut-off score: 80%.
