Course objectives
The course acquaints the students with the principles of care for children and with the respective diagnostic and nursing procedures. It points out the particularities of care for children as compared to other types of nursing activities.
Syllabus
  • Classification childhood stages from infant stage - particularities of individual periods.
    Nutrition and fluid and electrolyte balance, disorders of internal environment.
    Nursing care for children with respiratory system diseases.
    Nursing care for children with gastrointestial system diseases.
    Nursing care for children with excretory system diseases.
    Nursing care for children with cardiovascular system, blood and hematopoiesis disorders.
    Nursing care for children with nervous system diseases.
    Nursing care for children with endocrine gland diseases and metabolic disorders.
    Nursing care for children with immune system diseases, children allergies.
    Nursing care for children with infectious diseases.
    Nursing care for children in acute and life-threatening conditions.
    Organization of care for children. Charter of rights of hospitalized child. Competences of general and children's nurse when caring for a child. Particularities of nurse's work at children's ward.
    Particularities of nursing care and child's needs in individual stages of psychomotoric development. Assessment of child's growth and development.
    Child's vital functions, their measurement and assessment.
    Nutritional needs of children in individual development stages. Assessment of nutrition.
    Hygienic care for children.
    Prevention in paediatrics. Issues of child's upbringing, play activities, cooperation with play therapist.

The contact instruction is implemented through the system of tutorials on selected topics. The combined part of the studies is implemented in the e-learning course environment at e-portal http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. The students have study supports including correspondence tasks available for instruction there. The course is concluded by a credit in written or oral form; within it, the student will demonstrate knowledge of basic and recommended reading and be able to discuss the processed correspondence tasks. The student will have the opportunity to consult individually the topics studied, through individual or group tutorials or electronic mail.
The condition of awarding of credit is compulsory attendance to lessons, with minimally 80% attendance; the teacher will specify substitutive way of fulfilment of study duties to students who cannot attend compulsory lessons for serious reasons.
Credit requirements: elaboration of nursing plan for care for a child.
Exam: written test, cut-off score: 80%.
