- Course objectives
- The course is conceived as a theoretical-practical one. It supplies knowledge and skills necessary to provide first aid. Students will acquire knowledge of the principles of first aid in a variety of health-damaging conditions. The course includes findings from the field of integrated rescue system and crisis management. The course describes common causes and symptoms of selected traumatic and atraumatic health-damaging conditions (e.g. injuries to the head, chest, extremities; burns, spasm, seizure disorders, etc.). Th main emphasis is placed on basic and extended cardiopulmonary resuscitation of children and adults. Having completed the course, the students will gain orientation in recommended procedures (guidelines) for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as issued by the European Resuscitation Council.
- Learning outcomes
- Professional Knowledge: Students can describe the causes and symptoms of traumatic and atraumatic health-damaging conditions and are able to explain the principles of first aid. They can define best practices for CPR and describe the significance of integrated emergency services and crisis management.
Professional Skills: Students can provide first aid and CPR with selected traumatic and atraumatic health-damaging conditions effectively.
General Qualification: In selected traumatic and atraumatic health-damaging conditions, students are able to assess and determine the order of providing first aid to the injured / afflicted individuals and provide them first aid accordingly.
Competences: Having completed the course, the students will orient themselves in the field of first aid and CPR. Students will deepen and perfect the knowledge and skills through further studies and clinical practice. - Syllabus
- Training:
- 1. Significance and provision of first aid, assessment of priorities, structuring of first aid, uniform procedure for the provision of first aid. 2. Integrated emergency services, disaster medicine, teamwork. Emergency incidents with mass health damage.
- 2. Basics of bandaging techniques. Monitoring health condition of the patient. Positioning and transport of afflicted individuals. Loss of consciousness. Urgent cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- 1. First aid for choking, drowning. Convulsions and seizure conditions.
- 2. Bleeding - internal, external, arterial, venous, mixed, states of shock.
- 3. Injuries by cutting, stabbing, slashing, laceration, gunshot. Foreign bodies in wounds and bodily orifices. Injury by animals.
- 4. Serious injuries - head and central nervous system, spine and spinal cord, neck, chest, abdomen.
- 5. Extremity injuries, fractures of large bones and joints, pelvic injuries. Pressure injuries.
- 6. Damage by heat, cold, electric current, chemicals. Intoxication.
- 7. Selected acute conditions in internal medicine. Emergency childbirth.
- 8. Severe acute conditions in children - acute respiratory distress, febrile convulsions.

- Credit is awarded under the condition of fulfilment of 80% attendance at the training (students who could not attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements) and completion of a written test. Minimum success rate 80%.
