Course objectives
The course is conceived as a theoretical one. Its content builds on knowledge gained in anatomy. The course objectives are to introduce to the physiology of individual organ systems, paying special attention to systems connected to gynecology and obstetrics.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students can define the terms of physiology, explain these concepts and also explain the function of individual organ systems.
Professional Skills: Students can use the terminology in their practice, as it forms the cornerstone of their work.
General Qualification: Students are well versed in the professional terminology and use their knowledge in the performance of midwifery.
Competences: Students have acquired the ability to use the professional terminology and will continue to develop it on the theoretical level during further studies and clinical practice.
Syllabus
  • 1. Ontogenetic stages of human development. Cell function. Body fluids. Homeostasis.
  • 2. CNS integration function, sensory function.
  • 3. Human ability to move and its management.
  • 4. Functions of the endocrine glands, basic effects of hormones.
  • 5. Blood, lymph. Cardiovascular function, blood capillaries, functions and their management.
  • 6. Ventilation and respiratory function.
  • 7. Functions of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). 8. Substance and energy metabolism. Introduction to rational nutrition.
  • 9. Excretory functions of the organism. Acid-base balance (ABB). Thermoregulatory mechanisms.
  • 10. Human reproductive function.
  • 11. Ventilation role in maintaining ABB, assessment of human ventilation functions (spirometers, FEV).
  • 12. Biologically important reflexes in the GIT (swallowing, defecation), gastric barrier.
  • 13. The characteristics of the child's physiological functions. Changes in physiological functions in adolescence.
  • 14. Stress factors, phases of stress, benefits of stress, risks of stress. Subjective factors of physical discomfort (acute and chronic pain, itching, nausea, etc.).
  • 15. Specifics of the physiological functions of adult men and women. Energy balance of the body - assessment of food intake. The role of the liver in metabolism.
  • 16. Specific changes in physiological functions during aging and old age.
  • 17. External symptoms of cardiac activity, blood pressure changes under physiological conditions.

Assessment methods
Credit is awarded under the condition of fulfilment of 80% instruction attendance (students who could not attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements) and completion of a written test. Oral examination.
