- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to apprise students with the causes, course and possible solutions of inter-ethnic conflicts in Europe, with an emphasis on border regions in Central Europe and the Czech Republic. On the basis of ethnological, historical, sociological, psychological, cultural, political, comparative and other knowledge students will be able to reflect relations between states and nations, ational and ethnic minorities, including the assessment of national myths, stereotypes and prejudices. Emphasis will be placed on explaining the causes and consequences of the division of Europe in the 20th century for the people living in the border regions, on the knowledge of current centres of inter-ethnic tensions, particularly in Central Europe and in the border regions of the Czech countries, and to identify starting points for further development. The lectures will introduce the students to the basic concepts and theory of ethnic explain how the contradictory interests of Central European nations and states in the 20th century influenced the development of inter-ethnic relations in border regions. There will also be given particular examples to characterize history and specifics of inter-ethnic relations in the border regions of the Czech Republic with emphasis on the involvement of political, social and cultural differences and the characteristics of the major contemporary problems of ethnic minorities in border areas. Students should show knowledge of the origin, development and specifications of all major modern inter-ethnic conflicts in Europe and in the Czech Republic. They should find new information about this topic, should be able to reflect cultural differences and stereotypes in relations between nations and nationalities in the border crisis regions and should focus on current issues of mutual cooperation of nations and ethnic groups in the border areas and on the possibility of their practical solution.
