Course objectives
The course objective is to practice all necessary knowledge, skills and work habits in the dental hygienist's office.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: setting indices (scores) according to given (international) standards with an emphasis on compliance with fixed criteria.
Professional skills: communication with the client in regard to the rational acquisition of important medical history data and especially in respect of ethical standards of handling personal data and in respect of the clients’ rights.
General competence: examination of the oral cavity and formulation of the examination results in a clear and comprehensible way. Familiarization with the work of a dentist and instrumentalist, assistance in surgical procedures on periodontium.
Competence: motivating patients to perform proper oral hygiene and properly instructing them on dental models as well as in the patients’ mouth.
Areas of dental hygienists’ professional practice: Reduced toolkits. Treatment of tools. Disinfection, cleaning, sterilization, storage. Removal of tartar, treatment of filling surfaces, including overhanging and high fillings. Subgingival treatment (deep scaling, root planing). Familiarization with the work of a dentist and instrumentalist, assistance in surgical procedures on periodontium. Preparation of a treatment plan, presentation of the patient, management and planning of the recall system (analysis of the causes of periodontal disease). Motivation of the patient for maintaining oral hygiene, information on proper nutrition and methods of prophylaxis of tooth decay. Preparation of an individual oral hygiene program. Oral health education in clients as part of clinical practice. Presentation of a case report for a selected Client.

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: Verified fulfilment of the performances and activities listed in the Dental Hygienist Services Records (Logbook). 100% attendance.
Exam: practical in a dental office and case report elaboration on a selected client, followed by defence.
