Course objectives
The course is aimed at acquainting the students with information on involution changes, health care, medical condition and diseases of elderly people. The course describes nursing care for seniors at theoretical and practical levels. In addition to characteristics of aging and old age, specific illnesses suffered from by elderly people, the emphasis is put on specific differences in satisfaction of elderly people's needs. Attention will be paid also to differences in multi-disciplinary care for seniors in the fields of primary, secondary and tertiary health care. After finishing the course, the students will have good grasp of the issues of nursing care for seniors, both at theoretical and at practical level. They will respect the seniors' individuality.
Syllabus
  • 1. Current trends in prolongation of human life, classification of elderly age in adult population.
    2. Morbidity and mortality (life span, the most frequent chronic diseases).
    3. Physical changes in senior age (individual body organs and systems).
    4. Healthy old age - defining goals for elderly people; development of services and care for seniors within primary and tertiary care.
    5. Organizations of health care and social services; basic differences in the fields of primary, secondary and tertiary care for seniors.
    6. Support to health and prevention in primary care (anamnesis, physical examination, laboratory and diagnostic tests, education, consultancy, diet, exercise; reduction of smoking, alcohol, treatment of addictions; prevention of injuries, falls, burns; care for teeth and dentures; care for endangered groups of seniors at hormonal therapy, at overdosing of analgesics and salicylates; sun protection of skin, immunization: tetanus, influenza, pneumococcal infections; hepatitis B in endangered groups).
    7. Secondary care: acute clinical conditions, treatment and prevention of complications (nursing care).
    8. Tertiary care: chronic conditions, treatment and prevention of complications (nursing care).
    9. Clinical conditions of perception disorders, memory disorders, anxiety, sadness, sorrow, hopelessness, helplessness, confusion, dementia, suicidal tendencies, etc.

    10. Rights of seniors, basic differences in holistic nursing care for seniors' needs (most frequent nursing diagnoses).
    11. NC (=nursing care) for seniors with breathing disorders; heart disorders; thermal regulation disorders.
    12. NC for seniors with fluid and electrolyte balance disorders; food intake disorders.
    13. NC for seniors with disorders of urination and defecation.
    14. NC for seniors with restricted movement abilities with extended stay in bed.
    15. NC for seniors with pain (acute or chronic) and physical discomfort: nausea, vomiting, itching.
    16. NC for seniors with self-care deficit (incapability to: eat, have a wash, have a bath, get dressed, go to the toilet, go shopping, cook, do the housekeeping).
    17. NC for seniors with perception and memory disorders; with manifestations of anxiety, sadness, sorrow, stress, hopelessness, confusion. NC for seniors with helplessness, dementia and suicidal attempts.

80% attendance at practical sessions (the teacher can specify substitutive way of fulfilment of study duties to students who cannot attend compulsory lessons for serious reasons)
Credit requirements: elaboration of nursing care plan, written test (cut-off score 80%).
Requirements on exam: oral exam.
