Course objectives
The course objective is to introduce the problems of work with seniors in the context of special education and obtain comprehensive theoretical information about the discipline that deals with the education and care of the elderly in the Czech Republic.
Learning outcomes
Professional knowledge:
- students can characterize the scientific discipline and the object to which it is directed
- students are familiar with basic terminology of gerontopedagogical theory in the context of special education
- students understand the differences in the classification of old age and the ageing process from the perspective of various disciplines
- students can assess the societal trend towards older people in the population
- students are familiar with the problems of dementia and subsequent ailments of the old age
- students can assess the general risks of the ageing population.
- students knows the possibilities of residential and institutional facilities for the elderly
- students can evaluate various options for tertiary education for seniors in the country
Professional skills:
- students can apply various senior classification scales
- students can apply the MMSE test (according to the Czech criteria)
- students can evaluate the possibility of progress of dementia in seniors according to usual outputs
- students can assess the risk of ageing population from the perspective of the entire society
General qualification:
- students can assess the senior population in terms of risks and opportunities
- students can assess the abilities of seniors according to the simple cognitive triad
- students know the differences between different residential facilities for seniors in the Czech Republic
- students can apply the expertise of the subject in interaction with seniors
Syllabus
  • 1. Delimitation and definition of geragogy in the general context of the current situation towards care for the elderly.
  • 2. History of care of seniors, seniors in history.
  • 3. Characterizing terminology relating to old age and the ageing process.
  • 4. Multidisciplinary approaches to old age and seniors.
  • 5. Comparison of classifications related to old age and seniors from different perspectives, living areas and scientific disciplines.
  • 6. The parameters of age, with a focus on risks of the senior population.
  • 7. Seniors in relation to special education and disability issues.
  • 8. The most frequent complications of ageing - dementia and diseases associated with ageing.
  • 9. Care of the elderly in specialized homes and institutions.
  • 10. Education in old age.
  • 11. Excursion to a facility for the elderly (subject to availability).
  • 12. Revision of the curriculum.

Lectures, discussions, brainstorming, interview, individual work, self-study.
Assessment methods
Submitting a term paper. Topic: Special educator’s role and possibilities in an activating type of work with a senior. Successful completion of the final test, ie. 75% of correctly answered questions.

The course can also be completed outside the examination period.
Teacher's information
Personal contact in teaching, consulting hours. During continuous study, the student uses the study support and processes selected correspondence tasks. Here he will also demonstrate knowledge of compulsory literature and contact teaching lectures. The student will be able to continuously consult individually studied topics of the subject through e-mail, individual or group consultations.
