Course objectives
The course introduces students to the issues of social and legal protection of children and youth, with its historical context and current global trends.Students learn the issues of SPOD in a family context and the wider social context, including the issues of diagnosis.An integral part of the course is the skill of assessing a family in terms of fulfilment of the child’s needs.
Learning outcomes
Acquired Competences:
Navigation of the legal order regarding this issue, SPOD tools and theories of substitute family and institutional care.
Professional Skills:
The skill of critical analysis of the situation of the family, recording notation, training experience with case conferences.
General Qualification (Competence)
Having completed the course, students will be competent not only to use their knowledge and skills for specific work with clients, but also to respond better to the specific features of target client groups.At the same time, the methods of the course instruction will encourage the development of critical thinking, creativity and the students’ ability to make decisions independently and responsibly.
Syllabus
  • 1. The importance of a happy childhood family, education.
  • 2. The beginnings of the protection of children and childhood until modern times.
  • 3. The Industrial Revolution, the Enlightenment, assistance and protection of children.
  • 4. First Republic (Czechoslovakia), the Communist era.
  • 5. Current paradigms of social and legal protection of children and their impact on practice.
  • 6. Changing the paradigm and tools of SPOD.
  • 7. Practice in neighbouring countries - comparative view of contemporary Europe.
  • 8. Tools of SPOD in the Czech Republic.
  • 9. Assessment of psychomotor development of the child and family assessment, practical experience of report notation.
  • 10. Case conferences and related services for people on records and carers.
  • 11. Dilemmas of substitute family care.
  • 12. Transformation of residential institutions for children and youth.

Assessment methods
Compulsory attendance at 80% of the seminars at least.The fundamental condition for the successful completion of the course is knowledge of the terminology, paradigms of Social-Legal Child Protection (SPOD - Sociálně-právní ochrana dítěte), their impact on the Czech practice.
