Course objectives
The course provides a foundational insight into the issues of the nonprofit sector and nonprofit organizations, enabling a critical understanding of current developments within the nonprofit sphere and its role in the transformation and modernization of Czech society after 1989. The aim of the course is to introduce nonprofit organizations and demonstrate how contemporary nonprofit organizations serve as environments where individuals are socialized into the role of responsible, engaged citizens. The primary emphasis is placed on the ability to apply theoretical knowledge and approaches when analyzing selected nonprofit organizations as well as the nonprofit sector as a whole.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- define key concepts, explain the characteristics of nonprofit organizations, and describe their role in society,
- apply knowledge of the legal forms of nonprofit organizations and methods of financing, including the ability to identify relevant funding sources,
- analyze practical examples and evaluate the social impact of nonprofit activities,
- identify current challenges and innovations in the nonprofit sector and discuss their implications for both Czech and global society.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector - Definitions, characteristics, and roles of the nonprofit sector. Differences between the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.
  • 2. History and Development of the Nonprofit Sector - Historical milestones in the Czech Republic and abroad. Evolution of the role of nonprofit organizations over time.
  • 3. Legal Framework of the Nonprofit Sector - Legal forms of nonprofit organizations (e.g., associations, foundations, public benefit corporations). Laws governing the activities of nonprofit organizations.
  • 4. Funding of Nonprofit Organizations - Sources of funding: subsidies, grants, fundraising, crowdfunding. Examples of best practices in financing.
  • 5. Management and Structure of Nonprofit Organizations - Organizational structures and leadership roles. Strategic planning and project management.
  • 6. Social Impact of Nonprofit Organizations - How to measure and evaluate the impact of nonprofit activities. Examples of successful projects with significant impact.
  • 7. Community Engagement and Volunteering - Importance and role of volunteers. How to motivate and engage the community.
  • 8. Trends and Innovations in the Nonprofit Sector - Digital technologies, social media, and their influence. Social entrepreneurship and innovative approaches.
  • 9. Challenges and Issues in the Nonprofit Sector - Sustainability, transparency, and accountability. Legislative and financial obstacles.
  • 10. Conclusion and Discussion - Summary of key insights and reflections. The future of the nonprofit sector.

Teaching methods
Interactive lectures. Group work (solving model situations). Discussions on specific examples from practice. Student presentations on selected topics.
Assessment methods
Exam - Oral - Verification of students' knowledge and skills in accordance with the objectives and content of the course, graded A-E. Conditions for registering for the exam: 1. Attendance - Participation is mandatory. A maximum of 2 hours of absence is allowed due to illness or serious circumstances. The reason for the absence must be sent to the course instructor via email. 2. Presentation of a topic and meeting the requirements for individual exercises - As per the pre-determined schedule, the student must present a topic and be able to discuss it with others. 3. Active participation in exercises - Students are required to actively engage in activities and discussions as assigned. A passive approach may result in not meeting the exercise requirements.
