Course objectives

The aim of the course is to provide basic theoretical (and partly practical) knowledge about the Snoezelen – MSE concept. The course consists of theoretically oriented seminars that introduce the fundamental principles and foundations of this method, its determinants, possibilities, and characteristics of the multisensory Snoezelen concept within the Czech context. At the same time, students become familiar with a model Snoezelen room, where they gain information about its use, equipment, technical aspects, and the principles of working with the target group.

Learning outcomes

By completing the course, the student will acquire:

Professional knowledge:

  • Can define multisensory concepts in general;
  • Is familiar with the history and context of the development of the Snoezelen – MSE concept;
  • Is oriented in the epistemological foundations of the Snoezelen concept;
  • Knows the possibilities of using a multisensory environment;
  • Can describe the three basic levels of the Snoezelen triangle.

Professional skills:

  • Can assess and analyze the use of a Snoezelen room with regard to a specific client group;
  • Applies knowledge of didactic principles, guidelines, and conditions for the use of a multisensory room in a self-designed methodology.
General competencies:
  • Can adapt equipment, tools, and the multisensory environment to a specific goal;
  • Can evaluate the use of a multisensory environment according to an individual’s specific and special needs in a concrete way.
Syllabus
Students register for this course at the beginning of the semester in which they take it. Teaching methods include lectures, theoretical preparation, seminars, individual preparation under professional supervision, practical demonstrations, and discussion.

Topics:

  • Definition of the Snoezelen – MSE concept;
  • Characteristics of the principles of Snoezelen – MSE, variability of multisensory concepts, and the aim and purpose of this method;
  • History of the development of multisensory rooms and their use today;
  • Definition of the Snoezelen triangle, including a detailed description of the three participating levels;
  • Specification of the multisensory room environment, including technology, equipment, and possible furnishings;
  • Principles, rules, and didactic guidelines for work in Snoezelen;
  • Examples of methodological use of Snoezelen and practical exercises in a multisensory room.
