Cílem předmětu je podat základní ucelený přehled o principech a funkčnosti geografických systémů, možnostech využití GIS a aplikačních oblastech GIS. Studenti také získají základní poznatky o územně orientovaných informačních systémech v ČR (městské informační systémy a státní informační systém). Seznámí se s tematickou strukturou těchto systémů, datových a kartografických podkladů a také používaných standardů státního informačního systému. Pozornost je také věnována rámcovému seznámení s hlavními komerčními produkty, které jsou používány pro vytváření územně orientovaných informačních systémů.
