- Course objectives
- In the course, the questions of formation of modern nations, their mutual relations and issue of political and administrative development and international links are mentioned. The connections are displayed especially with regard to other obligatory selective courses, and those in particular which refer to economic, social and national development of central Europe. From obligatory courses there are history of individual countries and lecture on political programmes and movements in Europe.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction: Formation of modern society and modern nations in Hapsburg empire, origin of modern Czech society and its development till World War I; national relations in Hapsburg monarchy
2. Josefinism and its legacy. Hapsburg monarchy in Napoleon wars; period of so called Metternich absolutism; projects of reconstruction of the empire before 1848
3. Year 1848, beginnings of formation of constitutional life, Hungarian revolution, its programme and circumstance. Czech state-law programme, relation of Czech and German in monarchy, Slovak, Polish, Italians and South-Slavic in revolution years
4. Bach´s absolutism. Relations in individual parts of the empire, especially in Czech lands. War failures in Italy and decline of Bach´s absolutism
5. The reconstruction of constitutional life at the beginning of the 60´s of the 19th century. The administration of the empire, centralism and federalism. Austrian- Prussia war, enforcement of dualistic model and foundation of Austria-Hungary. December constitution. Reaction on state-law changes in empire (Czech, Slovak, Italians, South-Slavics in the 60´s of the 19th century).
6. Formation of modern political parties, democratization and national issue. Characteristics of political and federative life in monarchy
7. Czech politics of the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Czech state-law programme, fundamental elements, "staročeši" and "mladočeši"
8. Activization of Czech politics, punctuation, Czech and German, Czech political parties before war, phase policy, electoral law
9. Germans on way to from liberalism to preference of national principles. Relations in Galicia, Bukovina and in Transleithanian part of the monarchy
10. Brief characteristics of economic position, social, population and cultural development
11. International position of Hapsburg monarchy. Relation to Germany and other superpowers. Balkan political empire. Pointing of conflicts before world war
12. Hapsburg monarchy during World War I. Projects of post-war development. The decline of monarchy and rise of succession states, definite determination of their borders.
