Course objectives
The course brings closer the forming of social identities and their importance for social and political acting of participants. In the introductory part, the students are presented the general theory of identity, describing the means of creation of social and personal identity. The second part is dedicated to questions of forming, maintaining and transformations of national identities as prototypes of political identities whose origin is closely connected to processes of forming of modern states. The final part relates to questions of protest political identities in the context of modern social movements and next supranational social identities which currently relates to phenomena of transnational migration and European integration.

  • I. block: General theory of identity
    1. Searching for identity in historical, sociological, politological and philosophical perspective
    2. Social construction of identity? cultural identity; organism, sexuality and identity
    3. Political identity - usage of concept of identity in context of examination of political processes
    II. block? National identity as prototype of political identity
    4.National identity and forming of public political area; cultural and political concept of nation
    5. Mechanicals in forming of national identities in Europe of the 18th till 20th century; identification of ancestors, folklore, mass culture
    6. National movements of small (oppressed) nations, national identity in rhetoric of political parties
    7. Multicultural society and forming of regional identities (on the example of Silesia)
    8. Identity of national minorities, ethnocentrism and nationalism, strategy of cultural assimilation
    III. block: Protest identities and supranational social identities
    9. Forming of protest identities in the context of social movements (example of anti-globalism)
    10. Transformations of political identities in central Europe after 1989 (post-socialistic nationalism, anti-feminism and new forms of anti-Semitism and their displays in rhetoric of political parties
    11. Transnational migration and identity
    12. European political identity (nationality, citizenship and social integration in new Europe)

Teacher's information
Continuous reading of assigned literature, active participation in seminars, written seminar paper in the extent of 4 pages on topic regional identity from the area of student´s native place or residence summarized in the form of oral presentation in the seminar. The course is terminated by exam, which is composed of test with approximately 30 closed questions with four possible answers, from which one, more or all or none can be correct; the successful passing of the test is conditioned by correct answers in the amount of at least two thirds.
