- Expert Knowledge:
During the course, students will be familiarized with the contemporary concept of gender as a category denoting a group of male and female personal qualities and behaviour that formed by culture and social roles, and are passed on as a social pattern onto the gender of a subject. Student will acquire the information and knowledge of theoretical and methodological backgrounds of gender concepts and analyses in the Central European space and will be able to apply them on the social problems and social politics. The lectures aim to present gender as a social category that is projected into the reflection and interpretation of many social problems. Students are expected to demonstrate understanding of the processes in European societies in the context of the Equal Opportunities Policy and the gender organization of society with the emphasis on understanding their theoretical and methodological dependency that may be used by society to remove gender inequalities. Students will further demonstrate the knowledge of fundamental documents and legislation materials, ways of searching with respect to their MA specialization and their use in inspiring their academic qualification paper.
Expert Knowledge:
Students are able to explain theoretical and methodological backgrounds of gender concepts and analyses, and are able to apply them in social problems and in social policies. Students are able to locate and organize relevant information on the basis of defined methodological, formal and content requirements, and to present the assignment topic in the form of academic paper.
General Competency:
General competency involves the ability to receive gender as a social category which sensitively reflects and interprets the spectrum of social problems. Students learn to work on the basis of gender mainstreaming, ie to take into account different ways of behaviour, aspirations and needs of women and men, to evaluate them and support them equally.

- Course objectives
- The aim of the subject is to perceive the gender dimension of the society. The subject familiarizes students with contemporary concept of gender as a category desribing a number of male and female personal qualities and behaviour that are formed by culture, social roles and are passed on as social patterns on the subject gender in Central European space. The lectures aim to clarify gender as a social category which is projected into reflection and interpretation of many social problems in Central European space. The main aim of the seminars will be to introduce students into the reality of the gender issue, the analysis of concrete problems in society and the awareness of the significance of knowledge of gender issues for the functioning of labour market.
- Syllabus
- 1) GENDER AS A PROBLEM
Gender and society, the history of gender. Recommended gender indicators. Basic terminology.
2) FEMINISM AS SOCIAL THEORY
Social theory. Feminism as social theory. Women in the classical social theory. Brief history of feminism. The beginnings of feminism in the Czech lands.
3) THE CONSTRUCTION OF GENDER IN THE FAMILY AND IN THE SOCIETY.
The backgrounds for perceiving the terms of sex and gender. The theory of socialization and gender forming. Gender, race and class as social constructions. The approaches to the study of gender inequality. The streams of study of gender relationships in organizations.
4) LEGISLATIVE SUPPORT OF MALE AND FEMALE EQUALITY
The sources of legal review. Male and female equality in the EU, quotas as an alternative. The harmonisation of Czech legislation in the sphere of discrimination and equal remuneration.
5 ) SOCIETY FOR CITIZENS OF ALL AGES.
Legislation background for social security. Pension security. The national programme of preparation for aging. General dynamics of an aging population. The position of senior citizens and discrimination. Supporting senior employment. Discriminating against the generation of aging women.
6) GENDER, SOCIETY AND LABOUR MARKET
The backrounds of female labour. The structure of education of women and men in the Czech Republic. The participation of women in the labour market. Gender segregation. Discriminating against women in the sphere of remuneration. Theories explaining the forms and reasons for female discrimination.
7) GENDER AND AGGRESSION
Aggressive behaviour from the gender point of view. Domestic violence. Types of aggressive behaviour as the indicators of different strategies. Women and crime.
8) GENDER ASPECTS OF POVERTY
The concept of development. Types of poverty. Income poverty. Wider concept of poverty. Poverty in the country. Poverty in the city. Poverty and gender. Tackling poverty and the circumstances of the dimension of debt waiving. The examples of poverty in the Czech Republic.
9) THE CONCEPT OF SOCIAL EXCLUSION
Social exclusion. The policy of social integration.
10) GENDER BUDGETING
The genesis of gender budgeting. The rules and principles, instruments and basic prerequisites for gender budgeting.
11) FAMILY TRANSFORMATION, DIVORCE RATE, BIRTH RATE
Parent competencies. Divorce rate and birth rate.
12) THE GENDER ISSUE IN THE LABOUR MARKET - HARMONISATION OF WORK AND FAMILY LIFE
The genesis of extending cooperation in the process of harmonisation of work and family. The inspiration for the employment and company policy. The substance of harmonisation measures.

- Credit requirements: A short report on recent events. Qualified participation in seminar discussions. Written test to verify theoretical problems (basic terminology of the field, defining terms and principles, backgrounds and theories) and practical knowledge (applying socially and political gender measures in practice).
