Course objectives
The course is directed towards presentation of main periods and problems of development of countries of central Europe from the World War I till the 90´s. The attention is paid to not only superficial interpretation of history of individual states but to generalising explanation of the whole complex of relations dictating the character of coexistence (conflicts and cooperation) of communities living in central European region. The students will acquire the basic outline of profiling tendencies and features of forming of social, political and cultural transformations in this region in the 20th century with regard to whole-European context and its changes.
Syllabus
  • 1. Characteristics of approaches to phenomenon of "central Europe" in the 20th century: tradition and present day (theoretical reflexion, definition of concepts, discourse in social discipline, views of political practice)
    2. Central Europe at the verge and in the course of "great war" (1914-1918)
    3. Consequences of war conflict: peace agreements, new power-political structure of region, the most serious conflicts and their influence on situation in individual countries as well as in international context (1919-1924/1925)
    4. Unequal stabilization: main features and comparison of central European countries in the second half of the 20th century
    5. Central Europe in crisis and on way towards war conflict: national socialism, fascism, communism and democracy in the 30´s
    6. The World War II (1939-1945) and its consequences in central European region
    7. People democracies and the beginning of cold war: central Europe in 1944-1948
    8. Destalinization and foundation of post-totalitarian regimes in central European countries in the 50´s and the 60´s
    9. Central Europe in the 70´s: ambition and uncertainty of communist regimes
    10. From solidarity to reforms (1980-1988)
    11. Decline of communism in central-eastern Europe (1989-1991)
    12. Redefinition of national states and integration tendencies in the 90´s
