Course objectives
The objective of the course is to familiarize the student with major signs and symptoms of mental disorders and relevant therapeutic/nursing procedures. Additionally, an overview of ethical and legal issues in psychiatry will be provided. On completion of the course the student will be able to assess patient´s mental status and choose appropriate interventions. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student demonstrates knowledge of basic signs and symptoms of particular mental disorders based on current classification. The student demonstrates knowledge of the therapy and care in mental disorders in terms of their biological, psychological and social aspects. Professional skills: The student is able to choose appropriate interventions and adequate nursing therapeutic procedures based on the mental status of the patient. General ability: The student is able to assess current mental status of a given patient and to identify and meet patient´s unsaturated needs. Competence: The student mediates to individuals, relatives, families and groups necessary information in an adequate manner within the scope of nursing competence. The student ensures that the information provided is comprehensible to clients/patients and that the results of the educational process can be evaluated.

  • Lectures:
    1. Symptoms and syndromes in mental disorders.
    2. Organic disorders.
    3. Substance abuse and addiction.
    4. Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
    5. Mood disorders.
    6. Anxiety disorders and neurosis.
    7. Eating disorders, sleep disorders, personality disorders.
    8. Mental retardation/intellectual disabilities, mental disorders in childhood.
    9. Biological, psychiatric and social treatment.
    10. Legal aspects of psychiatry, ethical issues in mental care.
    Seminars and practical sessions:
    1. Specific features of psychiatric and mental health nursing. Assessment of patient needs and outcome planning.
    2. Nursing care in emergencies and acute conditions in psychiatry.
    3. Nursing care of patients with selected types of behavior.
    4. Nursing care of patients with organic disorders.
    5. Nursing care of patients with substance abuse and addiction.
    6. Nursing care of patients with psychotic disorders.
    7. Nursing care of patients with mood disorders.
    8. Nursing care of patients with neurotic disorders.
    9. Nursing care of patients with personality disorders and eating disorders.
    10. Psychiatric nursing care of pediatric patients and patients with intellectual disabilities.
