Course objectives
The course aims to provide students with basic terms from the discipline of rehabilitation (occupational therapy and physiotherapy), to explain the content of terms rehabilitation, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Knowledge of content and focus of these fields of rehabilitation are essential for providing complex care to client/patient. Procedures for Activities of daily living (ADL) practice help significantly to improve client/patient's quality of life. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student is able to describe and explain particular aspects of occupational therapy and knows basic differences between occupational therapy and physiotherapy. The student understands their significance for clients/patients with various types of handicap and of all age groups. Professional skills: The student is able cooperate with occupational therapist and physiotherapist and after training is able to carry on according to their instruction in individual part tasks - e.g. patient's self-sufficiency. General ability: The student is able to make independent decisions and responsibly choose suitable procedure for daily activities practice for patients with individual above mentioned handicaps, these activities had been consulted with occupational therapist beforehand and thus the student is informed how to work with and give advice to the handicapped when professional therapist is not present which contributes to complex care. Competence: The student is capable to give advice to clients/patients about using wheelchairs and is able to direct them to professionals in the field of occupational therapy and physiotherapy for further specialized information.

  • 1. Occupational therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation - basic terms, definitions.
    2. Significance of occupational therapy for complex care of client/patient.
    3. Significance of ADL (Activities of Daily Living)
    4. Adjustment of environment for people with combined handicaps.
    5. Adjustment of home environment for paraplegics. Adjustment of environment for selected diagnoses.
    6. Practice of wheelchair operation indoors and outdoors.
    7. Compensation aids for locomotion of children.
    8. Compensation aids for locomotion of adults.
    9. Social and work rehabilitation.
    10. Self-sufficiency of people with handicap - personal hygiene and dressing.
