Course objectives
The course aims to provide students with basic terms in philosophy, ethics and nursing, to develop their ability to overview general life topics and specific professional situations, to develop their ability of structural thinking in their profession and to help the students form their own system of values with emphasis on humane and sympathetic approach to nursing care recipients. The course includes theoretical lectures of selected topics and practical seminar activities which apply philosophical and ethical knowledge in specific situations typical for nursing care. Emphasis is laid on understanding value priorities and attitudes in relation to own health and other people's health.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
    1. Philosophy and ethics, ethics as a philosophical discipline
    2. Basic ethical stances, principles, values and theories.
    3. Ethics and religion, religion as the primary source of ethical rules.
    4. The rights of the patients, ethical rules in the legislative codex.
    5. Ethics in medicine and nursing - introduction.
    6. Ethical dilemmas in respect to science progress.
    7. Ethical issues in biomedical research.
    8. Ethical issues of assisted reproduction.
    9. Ethical issues in nursing care of the elderly.
    10. Issues of euthanasia and assisted suicide.
    Seminars:
    1. Philosophy as a field of study. Specific philosophical disciplines. Philosophy in nursing care. Basic philosophical terms.
    2. Being and existence. Ontology in nursing care. Existentialism, logotherapy and existentialist analysis. Frankl and Fromm's thinking in respect to health and illness.
    3. Pain and its dimensions. Thanatology. Problems of dying and death and connected ethical issues. Time as a philosophical category, subjective time of the patient.
    4. Gnoseology. Knowledge in medical professions. Sensory perception. Gnosis - epignosis - diagnosis - prognosis. Present gnoseological issues, gnoseology of database and cyberspace.
    5. Logic. Principles of right thinking. Work with concepts and terms.
    6. Axiology. Value systems. Classification and application of values. Health as a value. Altruism and facilitating behaviour.
    7. Holism and conceptual paradigms of nursing. Concept background of conventional and alternative medicine.
    8. Nursing theories and models. F. Nightingale and her attitude to philosophy. Henderson, Orem, Gordon, Johnson, Leiniger's models. Orland's nursing theory.
    9. Ethics and bioethics. Ethical issues and dilemmas in relation with the beginning of life and its course. Autonomy and respect for man.
    10. Ethical issues of nursing care. Ethical issues in the fields of pharmacology and research. Ethical codex. Informed consent and advance directives.

Attendance in a minimum of 90 per cent of seminars and preparation of following outputs are required for completion: Glossary of terms in philosophy and ethics - checked by tutor
Seminar paper - an essay on an assigned topic, alternatively a synopsis of a literary work on an assigned topic
Credit test, a minimum of 70 per cent of correct answers are required
Self-study of assigned reading - checked by tutor in an oral session
