Course objectives

The objective of the course is the theoretical and methodological preparation of students, based on the study of main schools and streams of historical thinking and scientific knowledge of modern history from enlightenment historiography (German classical historicism of the first half of the 19th century) to new trends and directions of the latest decades (e.g., study of mentalities, gender studies, microhistory, historical anthropology, etc.), and the reception of their influence on the historiography of Central European countries. Emphasis will be placed on the history of Czech and Czechoslovak historiography, moreover, students must demonstrate good orientation in historiography of other Central European countries and an exhaustive knowledge of one of them, based on the focus of their dissertation. In addition to general questions of theory and methodology of historical science, the extended study of historical methods and techniques of work with sources will include selected methods of other social sciences, which can be applied in the interdisciplinary studies of modern history.

Syllabus

• Topics:
  - Enlightenment historiography in Central European countries. Nationalism and romanticism in historiography in the first half of the 19th century, Leopold Ranke and František Palacký.
  - Positivist concept of history, new directions in historiography in the second half of the 19th century (economic and social history, cultural history). The crisis of historical thinking at the turn of the century and search for a new paradigm, influence of other disciplines of social science and the personality of M. Weber.
  - Czech historiography between Palacký and Goll, three generations of the so-called Goll's school, the dispute on the meaning of Czech history. The Cracow and Warsaw schools, Slovak, Hungarian and Austrian historiography before World War I.
  - The Annales school (approaches, methods and directions of research) and its influence in Central Europe in the 20th century. Historians, historiography and politics in Central European countries in the interwar period.
  - New directions of historical research after 1945 (history of mentalities, history of everyday life, quantitative history, microhistory, new economic history, historical anthropology, gender studies, etc.).
  - Marxist and exile historiography in Soviet bloc countries in 1945-1989, development of historiography in Central European countries after 1989.
  - Possibilities and limits of use of quantitative, qualitative and integrative approaches and methods of other social sciences in historiography.
