- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- The cycle of lectures provides the students with basic orientation in questions connected to study of process of urbanization and approximates its wider social, cultural, economic and spatial connections. Except for concept of the issue in view macro-perspective (i. e. especially development and changes of "long-term" and "medium-term" trends of European urbanization in previous two centuries) the cycle of lectures is supplemented by some important current topics, which approximate in a model way current complex transformation processes in urban area in micro-perspective on processes which create form and directions of development of European towns from the beginning of industrial era till present day. The interpretation will basically explain key socio-spatial changes which ended in creation of modern, dominantly urban society. In this perspective, the course can be regarded a prolegomenon to study of current urban questions and problems.

- 1. What is urbanization? (development of concept and attitudes to the topic, relation to other social processes)
2. Economic, demographical and residential aspects of urbanization
3. Social and cultural aspects of urbanization (examples Ostrava region, Bata´s Zlin region)
4. Urbanization and socialism
5. Factors of urbanization after socialism (social changes and transformation processes in the Czech republic after 1989)
6. Towns and modern technologies - towards to post-industrial town
7. Problems of old industrial areas and agglomerations (example Ruhr, Ostrava region)
8. Suburbanization - social, economic and ecological consequences
9. Constitution of modern municipal self-administration
10. Housing policy, changes of sphere of town housing
11. Resources and problems of current urbanism
12. "Renewed town" (examples of new strategy of selected European towns in territorial planning and care of public areas)
