Course objectives
The course aims to provide students with basic information and manual skills to perform specialized tasks. The course includes both theoretical information and practical sessions. After finishing the course, the student is able to perform individual nursing interventions according to latest knowledge and in observance of lege artis procedure. The course enables students to acquire basic manual skills and confidence in performing specialized tasks and procedures with patients/clients safely and in high-quality. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student acquires extensive foundation of theoretical knowledge about nursing techniques and procedures. Professional skills: The student is able to perform in practice basic nursing techniques and procedures in accordance with latest requirements.. General ability: The student is able to evaluate the patient's condition and select the most suitable nursing procedure. Competence: The student mediates needed information to individuals, families, groups, and their relatives in suitable form in regard to their competence and performs individual nursing procedures.
Syllabus
  • 1. Work management at a nursing unit. Care of hospital bed, auxiliary bed equipment.
    2. Examination and therapeutic positions. Manipulation with patient, mobility support. Evaluation of self-sufficiency.
    3. Prevention of nosocomial infection, barrier methods of nursing care.
    4. Nursing procedure for ensuring hygiene of children and adults, nursing care of patient with decubitus ulcers.
    5. Nursing procedure for food intake.
    6. Nursing procedure for defecation of children and adults.
    7. Nursing procedure for monitoring physiological functions.
    8. Nursing procedure for patients in pain.
    9. Nursing procedure for dying patients, care of a dead body.
    10. Nursing procedure for administering medication - theoretical introduction.
    11. Nursing procedure for administering oral medication.
    12. Nursing procedure for administering parenteral medication.
    13. Nursing procedure for administering medication locally.
    14. Nursing procedure for administering medication into the respiratory tract.
    15. Nursing procedure for administering intra-venous infusions.
    16. Nursing procedure for administering transfusions.
    17. Nursing procedure at surgical ward, surgical wound dressing.
    18. Nursing procedure for stomata.
    19. Nursing procedure for patients with biopsy and puncture.

Credit requirements: active attendance in a minimum of 90 per cent of practical sessions. (Student who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks to meet course requirements.)
Credit test, a minimum of 80 per cent of correct answers are required
