Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the course is to present the whole circle of national issue in central European region from the 19th century till present day to students. The students will be provided with theoretical and terminological questions - what is a nation. nationality, national minority, national identity, national state, nationalism, multiculturalism etc. The course provides characteristics of solution of national issue in central Europe after foundation of national states, their genesis and explains connected problems. It approximates the national composition of central European countries, relation of national and state-law principle (civil), characterizes identity of national minorities in individual countries of central Europe and their legal position with particular focus on development of the Czech republic. It analyses issue of nationalism in central European area. It also presents the role of European institutions in solving national questions (UN, OSCE, CE, EU) and characterizes norms and principles which were for that purpose adopted and the course of their realization. The work in tutorial presupposes independent work of students with literature and documents to given issue, preparation of enter presentations to taught issue and further discussion.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to national issue, explanation of principal concepts: nation, nationality, national minority, nationalism.
    2. Identity if ethnic communities, their main features (language, culture, national consciousness) and determinants (family, school, society)
    3. Characteristics of phenomenon of nationalism as complex and dynamic problem with multidimensional content, views of philosophers, political scientists, historians, sociologists (Herder, Renan, Gellner, Hroch etc.)
    4. Issue of nation formation, development of national movements in central Europe - 19th century
    5. Development of central European area from the national point of view after World War I, foundation of new state formations and creation of national minorities
    6. National composition of current central Europe, autochtonous and alochtonous national minorities, relation of majority and minorities
    7. National issue in Czechoslovakia in 1918-1938, 1945-1993
    8. National policy in the Czech republic and Slovak republic after 1993
    9. National policy in Poland and Hungary after 1989
    10. Question of migration, integration and toleration, attitude towards foreigners, questions of xenophobia and racism
    11. Multiculturalism - yes or no?
    12. International defence of national minorities rights (UN, EU, CE, OSCE)

Teacher's information
Composition of seminar paper on selected topic regarding national issue in central European area. During oral exam, the student should prove both the knowledge of basic theoretical concepts regarding national issue, and orientation in solving national question in central Europe from the 19th century till present day.
