- Course objectives
- The aim of the subject is to help the students to finish the diploma thesis and prepare them for defence. The course is arranged individually. Diploma theses demonstrate that the student is able to solve assigned problem in a written form and is able to defend his own approaches to the solution. They are original author works, it means a result of creative activity of a student. As a whole, the theses should not be a compilation, unless it is directly required by the assignment. The students are led to respect the ethics of authorship. Elaborated diploma thesis must, except for given obligatory parts according to university regulations, include: - abstract and key words (abstract is a brief description of the work´ s content without additional information, without own interpretation and assessment) - introduction (the subject issue, which the thesis deals with, is not treated, but it introduces on a general level the thesis topic, it defines its main aims and outlines its structure) - own text of the work, paper (it includes the overview of existing stage of works dealing with the topic, theoretical context of given issue is divided according to the structure of the topic in separate chapters and as necessary in further sections. The logic of division is important, it means suitable joining of subchapters in bigger thematic parts which are somehow related. If a practical part of the thesis is included, it is necessary to present the aim of this part of the thesis, used methods, research sample, means of data collecting and methods of their processing etc.) - the discussion can be, or doesn´t have to be included, with regard to the character of the thesis and instructions of the thesis supervisor (the discussion summarizes the main results which should be embedded in context of available published findings on concerned issue, see theoretical part). In the discussion, the student can comment on the results (e. g. why the result is such, why the result differs from the results published by another author, or it is in accordance with etc.). On the basis of the analysis of the thesis results, the student then confirms or disapproves hypothesis or hypotheses, or answers the defined research questions). - thesis conclusion (it contains apt summary of main findings which the student formulated in the paper, the findings are followed by generalization, embodiment in wider context, comparison to similar or related phenomena etc. and assessment of achieved results with regard to the thesis aims with application of possible partial conclusions from individual chapters. With regard to the thesis character, the conclusion may evaluate work hypotheses, research questions or qualified assumptions, evaluation of applicability of acquired findings and description of author´s own contribution to the concerned issue. The conclusion´s extent is at least three pages). The thesis supervisor assesses the elaborated thesis in an assessment, in case the thesis is recommended for defence, the student will acquire relevant number of credits. The assessment observes especially the content value of the thesis, formal arrangement including language and stylistic quality of the thesis and ability to work with literature. In case the practical part is included in the thesis, it is assessed if the theoretical part corresponds with the practical, if the qualified assumptions are in correlation with research analysis, and the overall quality of the research analysis is evaluated. As necessary, the thesis supervisor may consult with the student the preparation for diploma thesis defence.
