Course objectives
The course is designed as theoretical-practical. It teaches knowledge and skills for giving pre-medical first aid. The students acquire basic knowledge of first aid principles for various health-threatening conditions. The course includes knowledge of disaster medicine, urgent care and crisis management. The course describes most common causes and symptoms of injuries (e.g. head injury, chest injury, limb injury, burns and other). The main focus is on basic and extended cardiopulmonary resuscitation of children and adults. After finishing the course, the student will be well informed about recommended guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and cardiac resuscitation issued by European committee for resuscitation. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student is able to describe causes and symptoms of acute injuries. The student is able to define recommended procedures for CPR and describe the significance of crisis management and disaster medicine. Professional skills: The student is able to give first aid and CPR effectively for individual injuries. General ability: The student is able to determine the priority of treatment of the injured, give medical treatment to the injured. Competence: The student will be well informed about giving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The student will improve and perfect their knowledge and skills in the course of further study and clinical practice.
Syllabus
  • 1. Significance and giving first aid, determining priorities.
    2. Disaster medicine, integrated emergency system, team cooperation.
    3. Pre-medical first aid - stab wounds, gunshot wounds, slash wounds.
    4. Injury by animals, snake bites. Basics of dressing wounds technique.
    5. Bleeding - internal, external, arterial, venous, mixed, shock conditions.
    6. First aid for suffocating, drowning. Injury by heat, cold, electric current, chemical substances.
    7. Seizures, fractures.
    8. Serious injuries - head and central nervous system, spine and spinal cord, chest, abdomen, large bones and joints and pressure injuries.
    9. Serious acute conditions of children - acute breathing deficiency, febrile spasms.
    10. Principles of urgent resuscitation.
    11. Monitoring of injured person's condition. Positioning and transport of the injured.
    12. Precipitous childbirth, first aid in states of emergency.
