Course objectives
The course is conceived as theory. It arises from goals of the National Health Programme. It provides pivotal information on hygiene and epidemiology related to public health protection and support, on prevention of occurrence, spreading and restricting of infectious disease occurrence, on mass occurring diseases, on occupational illnesses and other important health impairments. It acquaints students with general epidemiology and epidemiological work methods, prevention of nosocominal (hospital) infections, issues of drug addiction, its hazards, prevention and treatment and following care during addiction. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students orientate themselves in all fields of hygiene and both infectious and non-infectious epidemiology as to the applicable legislation on public health protection. Professional skills: The students are able to use the acquired knowledge in nursing process in clinical practice and prevention of public health damages, in nutrition hygiene, children and adolescents, objects of common use, occupational hygiene, and the environment, epidemiology of infectious and non-infectious diseases and prevention of injuries. General ability: The students can choose the appropriate work procedures within public health protection while working in preventive and clinical medicine and provide people with appropriate information within some preventive projects. Competence: Consultancy in all fields of hygiene and epidemiology aimed at reduction of morbidity and mortality of population focused on primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, practice and adhering to the applicable legislation in the field of public health protection.
Syllabus
  • 1. Position of hygiene in the system of individual and community health sciences.
    2. Fields of hygiene, organizational scheme of hygiene services and hygiene care.
    3. Hygiene of the environment, knowledge of dangerous factors and their estimation. Environmental protection, incl. legislation.
    4. Occupational medicine. Definitions and contents, dangerous factors of the work environments, their assessment and biological impacts. Fundamentals of primary and secondary prevention.
    5. Hygiene of children and adolescents. General hygienic requirements in facilities for children and adolescents. Health dangers for children and adolescents, possibilities of prevention.
    6. Nutrition hygiene. Balanced diet principles. Nutrition of specific groups of people.
    7. Basic principles of the epidemiological work method.
    8. Basic principles of general and special epidemiology of infectious diseases. Infection transmission routes.
    9. Characteristics and division of infections according to pathogenic agents. Hospital infections.
