Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with basic information on law and legislation as well as applicable legislation related to the system of health and social care, including rights and duties of medical staff, clients/patients and state authorities. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students demonstrate knowledge of law and legislation and they demonstrate legal knowledge of the health and social care system, including rights and duties of medical staff, clients/patients and state authorities. Professional skills: The students observe legal standards and regulations in relation to patients/clients. General ability: The students are able to demonstrate their knowledge of terminology and applicable legal regulations and they can use this knowledge while providing nursing care. Competence: The student shall develop the acquired ability theoretically in subsequent studies and in clinical practice.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
    1. Legal order of the Czech Republic (Czech law) focused on the Constitutional Law.
    2. Theory of law, branches of law.
    3. Labour law, labour relations.
    4. Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine: (effective from 1.12.1999) and its practical application.
    5. Law in medicine - basic legal regulations in medicine 1.
    6. Law in medicine - basic legal regulations in medicine 2.
    7. Social security law.
    8. Liability.
    9. Patient's informed consent (right of self-determination). Protection of the human rights of the terminally ill and the dying.
    10. Liability for damages under the Civil Code.
    11. Legal protection of children and adolescents.
    12. Patient's refusal of medical treatment, nurse's refusal to provide medical treatment.
    13. Criminal liability.
    Seminars:
    1. Legal protection of patients as users of medical services.
    2. Specific medical records from the legal point of view.
    3. Personal data and information protection.
    4. Actions of a nurse taken after patient's death.

Credit requirements:
Attendance in a minimum of 80 per cent of seminars is required for completion. Students who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks.
Credit test, a minimum of 80 per cent of correct answers is required.
Exam requirements: oral examination.
