Course objectives
The course combines theoretical and practical lessons. It expands on medical knowledge relevant for clinical nursing practice. The course places emphasis on preventive care of the eye/sight and prevention of serious visual impairments. Additionally, the course provides an overview of selected clinical conditions and specific features of multidisciplinary care of persons with visual impairments and eye disease in secondary and tertiary care settings. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student is able to describe common eye disorders and to explain the principles of nursing care in ophthalmology in inpatient and outpatient settings, including post-operative care. Professional skills: The student is able to provide professional nursing care to patients in ophthalmology. General ability: The student orientates themselves in eye nosology, diagnostics, therapy and care. They are able to correctly administer medication in ophthalmology and to educate the patient within the scope of nursing competence. Competence: On completion of the course the student is ready to provide appropriate nursing care to ophthalmology patients within the scope of nursing competence and to develop knowledge of the field.
Syllabus
  • 1. Definition of ophthalmology, its scope and specialties.
    2. Common signs and symptoms in eye disease. Common methods of examination in ophthalmology. Highly prevalent refractive errors of the eye.
    3. Current trends in eye diagnostics and prevention. Implementation of lasers in ophthalmology, fluorescein angiography (FAG).
    4. Common eye disorders and their treatment, intraocular inflammation, intraocular tumors.
    5. Ocular injuries, social ophthalmology.
    6. Classification of vision impairments according to WHO.
    7. Surgical interventions in ophthalmology.
    8. Medication in ophthalmology.
    9. The role of nurses in ophthalmology outpatient clinics - specific features and current trends.
    10. Application of medication in ophthalmology (instillation), nursing process in the administration of medication into
    the eye (basic principles).
    11. Postoperative care.

Teacher's information
Attendance in a minimum of 80 per cent of seminars is required for completion. Students who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks.
Credit test, a minimum of 80 per cent of correct answers are required.
