Course objectives
Integration of a new professional in a helping profession is a continuous process beginning with pregraduate education and it is largely based on education and personality formation - in the case of nurses, both intramural and clinical factors are involved. To date, the importance of emotional aspects of professional development has been underestimated and curricula have not fully covered systematic work with attitudes, ethical dilemmas, personnel feelings and experience (the so-called portfolio of useful experience was not intentionally formed. The Psychosocial support system for nurses module aims at filling the latter gap (zero curriculum) and helping prospective nurses learn how to make use of reflective practice and self-reflection, critical thinking and creativity, how to integrate into the profession and pursue an appropriate lifestyle to prevent burnout and to facilitate lifelong anchoring of the nurse in the profession. Nursing operates the following support systems: mentoring, preceptoring (the so-called adaptation process in CR), supervision, coaching, mediation etc. The module covers selected support systems (mentoring, preceptoring and supervision - reflective practice) that graduates should be familiar with. Graduates are likely to encounter these systems shortly after graduation, either as their objects or subjects. The module is distributed across the curriculum and is based and experiential learning and active involvement. The chief outcome is not that of academic knowledge but, rather, experience and perception, awareness of possible ways of solving problems, personal mental hygiene skills and better understanding of client´s emotions and the student´s own emotions.
