- Course objectives
- In the introduction to the course, nursing is specified as a field of science with its own subject of research, theoretical models, standard terminology and classification systems and methodology. What follows is a chapter showing how to formulate a research problem, a research question and research goals. The chapter Quantitative Research is focused mainly on mastering of basic research techniques - standardized tests and scales, on principles of making of original questionnaires and their first and second stages of assessment. The chapter Qualitative Research provides knowledge about basic techniques of quantitative data collection - interview, monitoring, document analysis, case report sets. It instructs students how to assess quantitative data by means of a cluster formation method, grounded theory, matrix formation etc. The aim of this course is to present fundamentals of scientific methods of the field to students of nursing and to teach them to draft and execute as well as assess a simple empiric research in clinical nursing. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: Having finished the course Research in Nursing, students will be able to: a) interpret concepts of metaparadigm in nursing and to explain its relation to field paradigms. They shall be able to explain how the field metaparadigm and paradigm reflect themselves in research in the field; b) suggest a research topic and elaborate it to the form of research questions; c) explain principles of EBP (EBN); d) justify the selection of research methods and research strategy; e) explain principles of quantitative and qualitative research; f) use elementary statistics and selected methods of quanitative research for data processing; g) describe principles and individual stages of research planning. Professional skills: The students shall know how to: a) monitor and assess research in their fields of their specialization continuously and search for required up-to-date results of research by means of the EBP (EBN) method actively; b) implement research results into upcoming standards, methodologies and other materials which are intended to regulate clinical practice; c) make a simple research project and execute it (independently or within a small team); d) assess ethical and unethical behaviour of researches and authors; e) use selected methodologies and techniques of quanitative or qualitative research in their projects. General ability: After finishing the course, the students are able to plan and do basic empiric research, to make an empirically-oriented nursing project and to work by means of the EBP method. They are capable of cooperation within more complex research projects in clinical nursing practice. Competence: Having finished the field of general nursing, the students are ready to perform the role of a nurse - a researcher and innovator on an elementary level, mainly as members of a resolving team. They can: monitor research and development in this field, they can work with the EPB method and they can use results for development of quality and safety of care. They are able to participate in research projects, especially in the field of nursing, but also within a multiple-field team in medicine.
