Course objectives
The course combines theoretical and practical lessons. It integrates into the complex of clinical nursing courses. It familiarizes the student with clinical conditions and diseases affecting the skin and external genital organs. The course also provides an overview of methods and procedures in the treatment of dermatovenerologic diseases and pertinent nursing care (including prevention of complications) in primary, secondary and tertiary care settings. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student demonstrates knowledge of clinically significant manifestations in the skin area. They are able to describe basic skin and venereal diseases and their signs/symptoms. The student demonstrates knowledge of the principles of care in dermatovenerology and of relevant preventive and barrier measures. Professional skills: The student is able to provide professional nursing care of dermatovenerology patients. They are able to identify common conditions of the skin and address prevention issues effectively. General ability: The student is able to care for patients with skin disease, as well as to take care of the elderly and other patient groups with impaired skin integrity with a focus on pressure ulcer prevention. Competence: The student provides professional nursing care to patients in dermatovenerology departments (inpatient/outpatient). They take care of the skin of patients within community care.
Syllabus
  • 1. Primary care: health promotion and prevention of skin diseases and of damage to skin integrity. Basic examination of the skin, hair and nails, common cutaneous conditions (itching). Secondary care: diagnostic procedures and laboratory testing.
    2. Inflammatory diseases of the skin (dermatitis, exfoliative dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis); infectious diseases of the skin (foliculitis, furuncle/boil, carbuncle, cellulitis, herpes zoster); candidiasis, parasitic skin diseases: pediculosis, scabies.
    3. Autoimmune disorders (pemfigus vulgaris, toxic epidermal necrosis, scleroderma, dermatomyositis). Malignant skin diseases (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma). Venereal conditions (herpes genitalis, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginitis, candidiasis etc.) Sexually transmitted diseases (epidemiology, clinical signs, treatment and care).
    4. Skin care in the elderly. Skin care in HIV/AIDS patients.
    5. NP (nursing process) in patients with dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis.
    6. NP in skin care in the elderly and bed-ridden.
    7. NP in patients with boils, carbuncles, herpes zoster infections, candidiasis, pediculosis and scabies.

Teacher's information
Attendance in a minimum of 80 per cent of seminars is required for completion. Students who could not attend a number of lessons for serious reasons will be assigned extra tasks.
Credit test, a minimum of 80 per cent of correct answers are required.
