Course objectives
The aim of this course is to acquaint the students with basic symptoms of neurological diseases, diagnostic methods and diseases of the nervous system. The course describes specific symptoms, diagnostic methods and nervous system diseases. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students know basic symptoms of neurological diseases, diagnostic methods used in neurology and diseases of the nervous system. They are able to describe specific parts of the human nervous system. Professional skills: The students are able to diagnose problems of neurological patients and thus cooperate with a doctor, to plan nursing care and execute respective interventions. General ability: The students are able to understand pathophysiological relations of diseases independently, assess patient's condition and then choose optimum variants of nursing interventions and to establish correct nursing diagnoses. Competence: Within their competences, the students provide appropriate and adequate nursing care.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
    1. Health support and prevention of neurological diseases.
    2. Basic neurological examination, neurological diagnostic procedures and tests, symptomatology of neurological diseases.
    3. Paroxysmal diseases - partial, generalized seizures, status epilepticus.
    4. Degenerative diseases - Parkinson's, Huntington's and Alzheimer's diseases.
    5. Cerebrovascular diseases - acute stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, subarachnoid haemorrhage.
    6. Inflammatory and infectious diseases - meningitis, encephalitis.
    7. Autoimmune diseases - disseminated (multiple) sclerosis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, myasthenia gravis.
    8. Nervous system carcinoma - brain and spinal cord cancer.
    9. Diseases of peripheral and cranial nerves - trigeminal neuralgia, facial nerve paralysis.
    10. Headaches.
    11. Disturbances of consciousness.

    1. Nursing process for a patient suffering from Parkinson's disease.
    2. Nursing process for a patient suffering from disseminated (multiple) sclerosis.
    3. Nursing process for a patient suffering from Alzheimer's, Huntington's diseases.
    4. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
    5. Nursing process for a patient suffering from an acute stroke.
    6. Nursing process for a patient suffering from meningitis.
    7. Nursing process for a patient suffering from an altered consciousness level.
    8. Nursing process for a patient suffering from an epileptic fit.
