Course objectives
The aim of the course is to prepare students for dealing with people from a different cultural background. The aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge about the influence of socio-cultural environment on the development of human personality and behavior. The course is to contribute to the development and cultivation of multicultural competencies of students and prepare them for effective dealing with people with different cultural backgrounds. Exercises are of self-reflective character with a focus on identifying of own perception of stereotypes, communication barriers, rigid thought patterns in order to develop tolerance to differences among people. The course builds and develops students' experience, gained during studying of the Bachelor's degree programme.
Syllabus
  • 1. The concept of intercultural competence
    2. The perception of socio-cultural differences, stereotypes, socio-cultural prejudices and personal preferences
    3. Attitudes to minority population and attitudes to foreigners
    4. Reflection of own perceptual stereotypes
    5. Fear of social and cultural diversity and its implications for personal behavior
    6. Personal experiences and their impact on the evaluation of individuals and groups, the influence of education
    7. Influence of social groups and reference groups to education of other individuals and groups
    8. The effects of mass communication and communication media on the evaluation of different socio-cultural groups and forming relations with them
    9. Interaction and communication with members of different socio-cultural groups
    10. Contemporary trends of developing intercultural competences
