Students after graduation will be able to:
- Design a simple research topic and will know how it develops into research topics including a research project plan,
- Explain EBP principles (EBN),
- Explain the principles of quantitative and qualitative research,
- use basic statistics and selected qualitative research methods to process data,
- describe the principles and phases of research planning,
- to respect the ethical and legislative frameworks of clinical research and the ethics of scientific work,

- Course objectives
- The subject deals with the field of research with its application to health care. It defines research as an important part of identifying important data and information to improve health prevention, care and treatment. The general part is divided into basic areas of research, the terms basic and applied research are defined here. The main part is devoted to the methodology of quantitative and qualitative research, including understanding of basic philosophy, techniques of collecting quantitative data (questionnaire, poll, retrospective analysis) and qualitative data (interview, observation, case reports). Learning outcomes of the course unit The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic methodological principles of the scientific methodology of the branch and to teach them to design and to implement and evaluate a simple empirical research in the area of health care.

- Prerequisites and co-requisites:
Introduction to health research. Definition of science. Scientific knowledge. Characteristic features of modern science. Definition of terms of science, research and its species. Research in healthcare. Ethics of Scientific Research in Health Care.
2. Phase of research: preparatory phase, research project, subject of research (hypothesis and its types, methods and techniques,
processing, organization of research). Formulation of the research problem.
3. The individual stages of the research process.
4. Working with information sources. Information systems for science and research. Searching for the formulation and development of the research problem by the PICOt method. Evidence Based Practice - EBP (EBN).
5. Quantitative and qualitative research, research techniques, formulation of research questions and hypotheses.
Exercises
1. Methods of evaluating quantitative data table, mean values, graphs. Test hypothesis.
2. Qualitative research, basic methodology
principles and procedures.
3 Evidence Based Practice - EBP (EBN).
4. Formulation of an individual research problem, finding relevant studies in Czech and foreign sources.
5. Creation and presentation of a research project.
The contact instruction is led by a system of consultations on selected topics. The combined part of the study is realized in an e-learning course environment on the e-portal http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. Students are provided with study support including correspondence tasks.
