- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to provide students with information on involution changes, health care, medical conditions and diseases of elderly people. The course describes nursing care of seniors on a theoretical and a practical levels. In addition to characteristics of ageing and the old age, specific illnesses which elderly people suffer from, the emphasis is put on specific differences in satisfying of elderly people's needs. The attention will also be paid to differences in multiple-discipline care of seniors in the field of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare. The students will orientate themselves in the issues of nursing care of seniors, both theoretically and practically. They shall respect seniors' individuality. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The students are able to characterize aging and the old age, they orientate themselves not only in the issues of the most frequent diseases, but also in the issues of changes at the senior age (physical, mental and social). Professional skills: Based on their own individual assessment, the students can compile nursing care plans, in which they shall reflect the specific seniors' individual needs. General ability: The students are able to communicate with a senior independently and to choose an appropriate type of intervention. Competence: The students are competent to propose an appropriate intervention on the basis of the created nursing care plan on the levels of primary, secondary as well as tertiary care.
- Syllabus
- Lectures:
1. Current trends in prolonging of human life, division of seniority.
2. Morbidity and mortality (life span, the most frequent chronic diseases).
3. Physical changes at the senior age (individual body organs and systems).
4. Healthy old age - defining goals for elderly people; development in services of senior care within primary, secondary and tertiary care.
5. Organization of health care and social services; basic differences in the fields of primary, secondary and tertiary care of seniors.
6. Primary care support and prevention (anamnesis, physical examination, laboratory and diagnostic tests, education, consultancy, diet, body movement; restriction of smoking, alcohol, treatment of addictions; prevention of injuries, falls, burns; dental care and care of prosthodontics; care of endangered groups of seniors during hormonal therapy, overdosing of analgesics and salicilates; sun protection of skin, immunization: tetanus, influenza, pneumococcal infections; endangered groups: hepatitis B).
7. Secondary care: acute clinical statuses, treatment and prevention of complications (nursing care).
8. Tertiary care: chronic statuses, treatment and prevention of complications (nursing care).
9. Clinical statuses of perception disorders, anxiety, sadness, sorrow, hopelessness, helplessness, confusion, dementia, suicidal tendencies.
Seminars a practical sessions:
1. Senior rights, basic differences in holistic nursing care of seniors' needs (the most frequent nursing diagnoses).
2. NC (=nursing care) of seniors with breathing disorders; heart disorders, thermal regulation disorders.
3. NC of seniors with disorders of the fluid balance and electrolyte balance; with food intake disorders.
4. NC of seniors with disorders of micturition (urination) and defecation.
5. NC of seniors with restricted abilities of movement with an extended stay in bed.
6. NC of seniors with pain (acute or chronic) and physical discomfort: nausea, vomiting, itching.
7. NC of seniors with a self-care deficit (incapability to: eat, wash themselves, have a bath, get dressed, go to the toilet, go for shopping, cook for themselves, keep the house).
8. NC of seniors with perception and memory disorders; with manifestations of anxiety, sadness, sorrow, stress, hopelessness, confusion, NC for seniors with helplessness, dementia and with suicidal attempts.

Information on the extent and intensity of the course: Přednáška 9 HOD/SEM, Seminář 9 HOD/SEM. - Teacher's information
- Credit requirements: Attendance in a minimum of 80% in seminar ;s. The students shall attend the seminars at hospital with the following equipment: white protective coat, medical footwear, tag (name tag), nursing care plans. Creating of a nursing care plan.
Written test (cut-off score 80 %).
Exam requirements: oral exam.
