- Course objectives
- The course aims to improve knowledge of grammar rules, to refine communication skills in the English language (both written and oral), to introduce students to the role of English in general and specific communication and to basic quota of medical terminology. The course includes practice of all basic language skills (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing, Translation) with focus on understanding specialized text and on ability to communicate in situations specific for medical professions (speaking to patients, understanding documentation and specialized articles). After finishing the course, the student will be well informed about frequented medical terms (including anatomic nomenclature and its Latin roots), about key grammatical-communicative means and selected facts about health care systems in the English-speaking countries. Learning outcomes: Professional knowledge: The student is able to characterize English from linguistic and social viewpoints, to define basic language layers, to describe basic grammar rules, to name and actively explain key terms of specified thematic groups. The student is able to incorporate the acquired terms into context. Professional skills: The student is capable of basic general and specialized communication in English, both in spoken and written discourse. The student is able to understand simple specialized text and translate it adequately. General ability: The student acquires and produces verbally coded information in various professional and non-professional communication situations. Competence: The student communicates in English effectively, understands specialized text on elementary level of difficulty, expresses thoughts in English sensibly in spoken and written discourse and on both general and specialized medical topics.

- 1. Characteristics of the English language and its role in the world. Specialized communication and terminology. / Preliminary assessment of level of language skills.
2. Grammar revision 1 - pronunciation, spelling, articles, nouns. / Assigning of seminar presentation topics.
3. Grammar revision 2 - adjectives, adverbs, numerals. / Elementary communication in dialogues.
4. Grammar revision 3 - pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections. / Short autobiographical information.
5. Grammar revision 4 - verbs, system of tenses, word order, text structure, style. / Dialogues between nurse and patient.
6. Basics of medical terminology 1 - introduction, terminology of health and illness. / Making anamnesis of English-speaking patient.
7. Basics of medical terminology 2 - hospital and its departments, medical facilities (comparison of the CR and foreign countries). / Description in English.
8. Basics of medical terminology 3 - medical professions, working as a nurse, disciplines and specializations. / Dialogue between nurse and doctor.
9. Basics of medical terminology 4 - human body (external anatomy). / Understanding Patient Information Leaflet.
10. Basics of medical terminology 5 - human body (internal anatomy, physiology). / Communication during basic physiological examination.

- Attendance in a minimum of 90 per cent of seminars and preparation of following outputs are required for completion: Glossary of terms- continuous record of vocabulary, checked by tutor
Seminar presentation -assigned partial grammar topic, in the form of PPT presentation or frontal/ interactive oral presentation
Written translation of assigned text (1 standard page).
Credit test, a minimum of 70 per cent of correct answers are required. Students enter into the course with basic knowledge of the English language from secondary school (for part-time study students exceptions are possible, to be compensated by self-study).
