Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide student with information on basic procedures of communication with disabled, socially disadvantaged and The subject comprises both theoretical instruction and practical training. The main objective of the subject is to help students gain basic knowledge and develop skills in communication with persons with disease, disability or social handicap, and priorities of nurse-patient communication or team communication. Apart from interindividual communication, the subject includes a coverage of empathy and mirroring in communication. Attention is focused on practical training of communication situations pertaining to various disabilities. On completion of the course, the student is able to orientate themselves in communication with persons having various disabilities, with elderly persons, children and patient suffering from pain.
Syllabus
  • 1. Communication - key definitions and concepts.
    2. Communication with clients with hearing impairment; guidance, addressing, sign language.
    3. Communication with clients with visual impairment; guidance, orientation, addressing in public.
    4. Communication with clients suffering from pain. Acute and chronic pain and its impact on communication.
    5. Communication in bereavement, ´telling the truth´ issues.
    6. Communication and formation of healthy relationships; expressing cordiality, respect and sincerity.
    7. Mirroring in communication, mirroring techniques. Providing feedback in communication, positive feedback loop and negative feedback loop.
    8. Empathy in health care communication. Empathic behaviour.
    9. Communication with an elderly person. Influence of limited sensory perception on communication in the elderly.
    10. Communication with children. Specific features based on the age of the child. Communication with adolescents.
    11. Communication with adult clients. Communication while educating adult clients. Communication differences in men and women.

Teacher's information
Contact hours are based on consultation of selected topics. Non-contact hours are realized via an e-learning environment available at http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. At the website, students can use learning materials with on-line assignments. Credits are granted upon successful completion based on a written assessment where the student demonstrates knowledge of compulsory and recommended literature and discusses their on-line assignments. An examination is required. The student can consult the mentor concerning independently studied topics, be it in person, in group sessions or via e-mail.
Requirements for credit: an essay on an assigned topic (5 to 7 pages) and its defence.
Requirements for examination: oral examination.
