- Course objectives
- The course is aimed at acquainting the students with specific clinical conditions and diseases in the fields of surgery. The course describes symptoms and therapy for specific surgical conditions and explains the principles and procedures of comprehensive nursing care for specific surgical diseases. Having finished the course, the students will have good grasp of the issues of surgical nursing; they will be able to provide adequate nursing care for specific clinical conditions.
- Syllabus
- 1.Introduction to surgery. History of surgery. Overview of general surgery. Asepsis and antisepsis. Disinfection and sterilization. Conditions requiring surgical interventions. Categories of surgical interventions. Urgency of surgical interventions and their risks. First aid. Pre-operative preparation and post-operative care. Post-operative complications. Wounds in surgery. Prevention of nosocomial infections. Shock. Shock types. Principles of therapy.
2. Acute abdominal accidents: clinical conditions, examination methods, special pre-operative preparations, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operation. 3. 3. Abdominal wall surgery: clinical conditions, examination methods, special pre-operative preparations, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operation. Hernia.
4. Oesophagus surgery: clinical conditions, examination methods, special pre-operative preparations, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operation.
5. Stomach and duodenum surgery: clinical conditions, examination methods, special pre-operative preparations, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operation.
6. Para-alimentary organs surgery - surgical diseases of the liver: clinical conditions, examination methods, special pre-operative preparations, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operation.
7. Para-alimentary organs surgery - surgical diseases of gall bladder and biliary tract: clinical conditions, examination methods, special pre-operative preparations, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operation. 8. Para-alimentary organs surgery - surgical diseases of pancreas and spleen: clinical conditions, examination methods, special pre-operative preparations, patient's positions during operation, anaesthesia, surgical interventions, risks and complications during and after operation.

Information on the extent and intensity of the course: Přednáška 4 HOD/SEM, Seminář 5 HOD/SEM. - Teacher's information
- The contact instruction is implemented through the system of tutorials on selected topics. The combined part of the studies is implemented in the e-learning course environment at e-portal http://elearning.fvp.slu.cz/. The students have study supports including correspondence tasks available for instruction there. The course is concluded by a credit in written or oral form; within it, the student will demonstrate knowledge of basic and recommended reading and be able to discuss the processed correspondence tasks. The student will have the opportunity to consult individually the topics studied, through individual or group tutorials or electronic mail.
Credit requirements: 80% attendance at practical sessions (the teacher can specify substitutive way of fulfilment of study duties to students who cannot attend compulsory lessons for serious reasons)
Credit requirements:
Draft of nursing plan for a patient with a selected surgical disease.
Written test with cut-off score: 80 %.
