Course objectives
The course is designed as theoretical-practical complex. It familiarizes with fundamentals of applied modern management in health care with emphasis on the area of management and development of human resources, managerial skills and on methods and techniques of strategic management in health care, including their practical application. Special attention is paid to current issues of quality management in health care with focus on systems of assessment of quality of health care provided.
Syllabus
  • Lecture contents:
    1. Introduction in management - concept of management, applied management (in health care, nursing), levels
    of management, basic structure of managerial skills. Leader's role. Manager's role. Manager's profile - managerial
    skills.
    2. Management functions, system approach in management. Leadership, management, following. Company culture in
    health care. Functions of leadership and management, power. Function of controlling.
    3. Decision making and decision-making process in management. Main features and elements of decision making. Law and ethic issues, ethic of
    decision making in management.
    4. Strategic management. Methods and techniques of strategic management - SWOT, PEST, force field analysis,
    Delphi technique. Project management.
    5. Health care organizations, description of organization structure. Organizing - organization charts, interaction and
    communication within organization.
    6. Basic tasks of HR, HR activities, selection of people for jobs and functions, discrimination elements
    in selection of people. Power, politics and influences.
    7. Management of information and information sources. Information systems, PC communication.
    8. Communication in management. Introduction in controlled care and its tools.
    9. Strategies, methods and forms of provision of nursing care. Planning of work and services of nursing
    staff, organizing of nurses' work in the ward.
    10. Staff development and evaluation, job creation, adaptation process, supervision, mentoring, coaching.
    11. Influences on current nursing, internal and external factors, sustainability.
    12. Planning - setting of visions, strategies and goals. Fundamentals of marketing (marketing mix, advertising in health care).
    Benchmarking.
    13. Change management, re-engineering, resistance against changes, strategies to reduce resistance against changes.
    14. Team building through communication and partnership. Team work - responsibility, autonomy, authority, management and power, collective bargaining.
    15. Interpersonal and personal skills. Consumer - client - patient / community. Conflicts and conflict management.
    Delegation - skills in professional practice. Fulfilment and transformations in roles.
    16. Personal management: stress and time. Personal career management: perception of opportunities.
    17. Lifelong education of employees, philosophy of learning organization.
    Seminar and exercise contents:
    1. Manager's personality in nursing. Role play - model situations.
    2. Stages, procedures and methods of decision-making process and problem solving - model situations.
    3. Practical examples - SWOT, PEST, force field analysis, Delphi technique.
    4. Communication in management - model situations, presentations. Preparation of bargaining.
    5. Quality management. Creation of standard, designing of audit - model situations, presentations.
    6. Time management techniques - model situations.

80% attendance at practical sessions (the teacher can specify substitutive way of fulfilment of study duties to students who cannot attend compulsory lessons for serious reasons)
Credit requirements: elaboration of seminar essay on selected topic and its oral defence.
