Course objectives
The course is designed for students' basic orientation in environmental policy. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic concepts, principles and procedures of policy and legislation of environmental protection in the Czech Republic and in the EU. Students will acquire basic knowledge about the assessment of selected environmental problems and knowledge about the use of the concept of sustainable development in environmental policy. Study Outcomes: Professional Knowledge: Students are able to define basic concepts of environmental policy. They can describe and explain the procedures and the principles of the environmental policy and environmental legislation in the Czech Republic and the EU. They can navigate in the evaluation of selected environmental issues. Professional Skills: They can deal with the program, legislative and institutional framework of environmental policy and navigate in the system of care for the environment in the Czech Republic. General Qualification: The students can make use of the concept of sustainable development in environmental protection policy.
Syllabus
  • Lectures
    1. Exponential growth of the human population and material consumption. Main factors of population growth.
    2. Economic growth in developed and developing countries. The effect of human population growth on the environment. Demographic forecasts.
    3. Emergence of environmental policy.
    4. Environmental policy in the Czech Republic and in the EU.
    5. Global environmental issues.
    6. Sustainable society and sustainable development.
    7. Indicators of sustainability. The ecological dimension of sustainable development and indicators (ecological footprint).
    8. Environmental policy of the Czech Republic: the program, legislative and institutional framework. The management system of environmental care in the Czech Republic.
    9. Legislation on environmental care, and the management tools of environmental care.
    10. Important international agreements in the field of environmental protection.
    11. Public sector in the environmental policy of the Czech Republic. Sustainable development of the landscape and of the countryside.
    12. Public sector as a tool for sustainable development of the environment in the EU and the Czech Republic.
    13. Summary
    Seminar
    The lecture topics are followed by seminars, in which basic skills necessary for mastering the foundations of environmental policy are developed. The seminar will develop the students' practical skills necessary for the application of the findings in environmental policy on the solution of a selected environmental issue. To pass the seminar, students need to write a paper on a selected topic concerning the use of environmental policy in solving an environmental issue, using selected literature.

Teacher's information
In the consultations, students will be assigned continuous monitoring work in the field of the use of environmental policies to address specific environmental problems - e.g. air pollution in a selected location. Students will actively participate in the activities and will be able to regularly consult individually studied topics of the course via e-mail and in the consultation hours.
The instructor will notify the students on the topics that have not been fully lectured for them to seek in the compulsory literature or at the e-learning site.
