Course objectives
The objective of the course is to acquaint the students with the history of the vocation of dental hygienist, its duties and job description. Students will gain information on individual and professional oral hygiene, recommendations of appropriate mechanical and chemical means of individual oral hygiene and emphasis will be laid on the significance of dental microbial plaque in the etiology of the creation of dental cavities and parodontopathy.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge: Students have knowledge about mechanical and chemical means of individual oral hygiene and they can define the basic pillars of oral health - nutrition, hygiene, fluoridation. They have knowledge about the etiopathogenesis of dental microbial plaque.
Professional Skills: Students can conduct basic examination of the oral cavity, motivate and instruct the patient and they can remove supragingival plaque.
General Qualification: Students understand the means of oral hygiene and the can use the information for recommendations of appropriate tools and techniques to perform oral hygiene. Perform entrance and maintenance examination of the oral cavity, including taking history, assessing the state of the periodont and soft tissues, as well as evaluating the indicative state of teeth and tooth decay.
Competences: Students can conduct basic examination of the oral cavity and of the level of oral hygiene.
Syllabus
  • Lectures:
  • 1. Familiarization with the field of dental hygiene, its history and of the content and significance of a dental hygienist at a dentist’s office.
  • 2. The dental hygienist’s dressing, personal hygiene, personal protective equipment.
  • 3. Ergonomics of work - workplace arrangement, position of the attending and of the patient.
  • 4. The significance of dental microbial plaque in the etiology of tooth decay and periodontpathy.
  • 5. Individual oral hygiene - mechanical tools, chemical maens (toothpastes, mouthwashes, gels, lotions).
  • Training:
  • 1. Techniques of brushing one’s teeth.
  • 2. Training in the use of mechanical and chemical means of individual oral hygiene.
  • 3. Professional oral hygiene - preparatory, hygienic, definitive stage and recall (competence of dental hygienists) 4. Extraoral examination.
  • 5. Examination of hygienic and periodontological indices.
  • 6. Use of examination tools.

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: 80% attendance at the training (students who could not attend compulsory instruction for serious reasons will be assigned an alternative way of fulfilling their study requirements).. Passing a credit test requires 80% success rate.
