Course objectives
The aim of the course is to develop communication skills in English (written and spoken) in the field of medical communication, to introduce students to professional terminology and situations that may arise in the profession of paediatric nurse. The course includes practice in basic language skills (primarily speaking, followed by listening, reading, and translation) with emphasis on comprehension of professional text and the ability to communicate in situations specific to the health professions. After completion of the course, the student will be familiar with common medical terms, medical documentation, and be able to respond in a variety of situations relevant to the profession.

  • 1. Introduction (motivation for study, level of English)
    2. Human body (body parts, systems, organs, specifics for children)
    3. Health problems I (common health problems, symptoms, illnesses)
    4. Health problems II (typical children illnesses)
    5. Children´s Ambulance (patient first visit, personal data, patient and family history)
    6. Basic observations in children (at the doctor, in the hospital)
    7. Hospital (directions, departments, equipment, team)
    8. Paediatric patient admission for hospitalization (room, schedule, situations)
    9. Surgery (process, units, anaesthetics, post-operation care)

Assessment methods
The course is completed by credit, which will take the form of a seminar presentation - a given medical topic prepared in the form of a PPT or a frontal/interactive oral presentation. The condition for the award of credit is at least 80% attendance at the class.
