Course objectives
The goal is to understand the basic definition, purpose and objectives of the basic psychological disciplines of developmental psychology and the application of its findings for the students of Public administration and social policy.Students are familiarized with basic knowledge about the physical and psychological human development in all its developmental stages - during the prenatal, neonatal, infant, toddler, preschool, primary school periods, pubescence, adolescence, young, middle and late adulthood and old age, including the specifics of their possible behaviours provoking conflict situations in the negotiations.
Learning outcomes
Professional Knowledge
Students acquire and demonstrate knowledge of basic theories of development, they can characterize the essential features of individual phases of ontogenetic development of man, and understand its rules and conditionality.
Professional Skills
Students are well versed in the normal course of human development (in particular periods of human ontogeny) and can use the acquired knowledge when working with clients.They are familiar with the relevant field literature, can locate, interpret and apply the gained information in practice.They are able to integrate the acquired knowledge to the needs of the practice in the field.
General Qualification
Students are able to perceive the interdependencies of task solution in various stages of development of the society.By completing the course, students will be eligible not only to use their knowledge and skills for a specific job, but also to respond better to the needs of clients, as well as members of teams.At the same time, the methods of the course will encourage the development of critical thinking, creativity and the students' ability to make decisions independently and responsibly.
Syllabus
  • 1. Definition of discipline, object and objectives of developmental psychology, application possibilities, position in the system of sciences and relation to other scientific disciplines.The concept of intellectual development, basic forms, factors and mechanisms of development.Methods of developmental psychological examination, longitudinal, semi-longitudinal and transverse research approach
  • 2. Theory of determination and periodization of development.
  • 3. Prenatal period and its importance for further development.Neonatal period.
  • 4. Infant and toddler age - development of gross and fine motor skills, perception and development of pre-speech expressions; cognitive development; socialization.
  • 5. Preschool age- development of basic abilities and skills, cognitive development, development of children's identity, emotional development and socialization.
  • 6. School maturity.School readiness.Issues related to premature schooling.
  • 7. Younger and middle school age- development of basic abilities and skills, cognitive development, emotional development and socialization.
  • 8. Adolescence - physical transformation, main psychological characteristics of adolescence, the development of basic skills, abilities and interests, cognitive development, identity development, emotional development and socialization.
  • 9. Adolescence - the development of an adolescent identity, socialization - relationships with adults, peers, going to work.
  • 10. Periods of young adulthood- cognitive development, socialization, identity of young adulthood; professional roles, partnerships, marriage, parenting, period of 1st retrospection.
  • 11. Period of middle adulthood - physical changes, the transformation of professional roles, change of partner relationship, transformation of parental roles, change of relationship to one’s own parents, middle-aged person’s identity.
  • 12. Periods of older adulthood- physical changes associated with the onset of ageing, cognitive processes, personality development and role changes, professional roles, marriage of ageing people, the role of grandparents.
  • 13. Period of old age- physical changes, psychological changes, retirement, change in the way of life, problems of dying and death.

Assessment methods
Students must actively participate in seminars and exercises, compulsory attendance of 90%.Admission to the oral exam is also conditional on appropriate levels of elaboration and presentation of a selected topic which extends on a lectured topic, and on the skills to lead a discussion.

Teacher's information
During the semester, 12 hours of tutorial will take place which will include explanations of difficult parts of the curriculum.In the course of continuous study, students use the study support which they process to fulfil selected correspondence assignments which are discussed in individual and group consultations.Students will work with study material at the e-portal https://elearning.slu.cz/enrol/index.php?id=149 . At the exam, students demonstrate knowledge of compulsory literature, study support and lectures of the in-person instruction.Students will be able to continuously consult the topics studied individually via e-mail, or in individual or team consultations upon request.Consultation days and hours are set by the instructor at the beginning of the semester but the instructor is also available by prior arrangement according to the students’ needs.
