Course objectives
The course aims to deepen and broaden theoretical knowledge and at the same time to develop students' creative approach to solving problems of financial situation and financing of companies. The emphasis in each subject area is on the integration of theoretical and practical concepts, including the ability to assess the current state and expected development trends, transformation, and adaptation problems within the theory and practice of corporate finance. The course assumes the use of standard mathematical methods, procedures, and tools.
Syllabus
  • 1. Financial management - its development and concept in business practice
  • The role of financial management in company management. The influence of the external economic environment on the financial management of the company. The impact of taxation and accounting on the financial decision making of a company. Methods of obtaining financial resources and their influence on the size and internal organisation of the enterprise. Dividend policy of companies.
  • 2. Methods of assessing the efficiency of business activity.
  • Methods of financial analysis as an input for financial planning. The position of economic added value in the process of corporate governance. Discounted cash flow methods for evaluating the efficiency of companies' investment projects. Solvency management in the context of corporate efficiency.
  • 3. Theories of capital structure management and their application in business practice
  • Static theories of capital structure management. Dynamic theories of capital structure management. The influence of the sources of financing used on the efficiency of the company's operation. The impact of tax and non-tax shields on business performance and their accentuation in business practice.
  • 4. Banking sector and financial markets as sources of corporate capital
  • The importance of banks and financial markets in the financial system. Models of bank financing of enterprises. Equilibrium and disequilibrium in the credit market, credit rationing, credit crunch. Theory and empirics of capital market models. International capital markets.

Teaching methods
Regular consultation hours are available. The university information system Communication by e-mail or MS Teams is used for the content of the course.
Assessment methods
An oral examination consisting of a professional debate and a defence of the seminar paper. Two questions based on the content of the subject are asked during the professional debate.
The seminar paper of 7-10 pages in total is thematically linked to the focus of the dissertation. The seminar paper identifies the research problem, presents existing theoretical and applied approaches to its solution, compares them and discusses their use in the dissertation.
