Course objectives (in Czech)
The aim of this advanced course is to bring students to an internationally recognised level of written and spoken English. Past experience has shown that it opens new opportunities to students in companies, teaching etc. because it shows that the student has reached a very high competence in general English.

Obsah kurzu:
1. Scenes from a romantic novel
Picture discussion, passage for comment, listening, use of English: descriptive adjectives; wedding or marriage?
Reading: gerund (going) or infinitive (to go)?
Use of English, listening, role play: who, which or that?; more kinds of comparisons.
Composition (a talk): order and sequence of a descriptive talk.
Revision and extension: infinitive with or without to? Gerund (going) or infinitive (to go)

2. A study in contrasts
Reading: not only...as well
Problem solving: lie or lay?; bring, fetch, carry or wear?; have something done.
Listening: phrasal verbs; the passive
Composition( argument): arguing for and against.
Revision and extension, listening test: revision of units 11 and 12.
3. A shopper's nightmare
Reading role play: relative clauses without who.
Picture discussion, listening: what clauses.
Use of English, role play: phrasal verbs
Composition (describing places): using with, who and which to combine adjectives.
Revision and extension: the passive; forming opposites (with prefixes)
4. Mysteries of memory
Picture discussion: reading: words connected with memory.
Listening, use of English: should have, must have or might have?; whose, which or that?
Use of English: word combinations
Composition (giving directions): follow the signs to ...; when you get to ... etc.
Revision and extension, listening tests: revision of units 13 and 14.
5. The man in the park
Picture discussion, reading: talking about a long time ago
Use of English: reporting suggestions; cost, value, expense, price or worth?
Use of English, listening: if or unless? until or by?; word combinations.
Composition (sequence): use of link words and time expressions for a sequence of events.
Revision and extension: further types of the future; four types of infinitive; review of tenses.
6. Servants of the future
Picture discussion: false or artificial? clean or wash? needs doing, myself, yourself etc.
Listening, use of English: small enough or too small?
Use of English: phrasal verbs; do or make? to or with? -ing clauses as the subject of a sentence.
Composition (giving advice): positive and negative advice
Revision and extension, listening test: revision of units 15 and 16.
7. Death trap
Picture discussion, reading: more about the passive
Listening: could, managed to and couldn't; must have been done; must have done.
Use of English: giving advice
Composition (argument): discussing different points of view.
Revision and extension: modals.
8. The woman without a name.
Reading: in case and if
Picture discussion, listening test: phrasal verbs with make; careful or careless? if or whether? a, an or some?
Use of English: had better/ had better not.
Composition (describing a process) use of the passive to avoid repetition.
