Course objectives
Goal of the subject is to introduce to students principles and importance of management and its interdisciplinary characteristics, and then to provide a brief outline of the development and the current state of this area. Attention is paid to the content of the managerial functions (basic, ongoing and safeguarding ones), and also to managerial negotiation. Management is understood as a system (organic unity of structure and managerial process). Determination of the function of a manager, styles and principles of the management in relation with the use of modern information technologies and the communication in management systems is included.
Syllabus
  • 1. Principles of management in international environment
    Definitions of management. Nature and functions of management. Management process and levels of management in international environment. Roles of a manager and managerial skills.
    2. The management theory in the context of international development
    Developments in management theory. Classical theories of management. Systems and contingency to management theory. Modern approaches to management theory. Management theory and globalization.
    3. Leadership – theory and practices in international environment
    Characteristics of leadership. Theories of leadership. Motivation, early theorists, later theorists. The leadership theories in the context of international development. Authority delegation and decentralization. Difference between authority and power. Groups and group behavior. Worker participation in management in international environment. Autonomous work teams. Group dynamics.
    4. International context of management
    Organizations as systems. Business organizations and corporate government. Developing of organization cultures. Business ethics and social responsibilities of business towards different groups in international environment. The role of information technology. Tendencies towards developing a unified global management theory.
    5. Parallel managerial functions in international context
    Strategic aspects of management. Objectives, policies and forecasting. Performance standards in management. Organization structures and its development. Delegation and empowerment. Production planning and control. Human resource planning in international environment. Job design and business process. Reengineering. Controlling performance. Traditional and modern techniques of controlling.
    6. Sequential managerial functions in international context
    Decision-making in international organizations. Managing change and implementing changes. Communication in organizations. Communication networks in international environment.
    7. Coordination in international environment
    Coordination and cooperation. Requisites for excellent coordination in international context. Types and techniques of coordination. Difficulty of coordination in international environment.
    8. Operations management in international context
    Competitiveness, strategy and production. Product and service design. Strategic capacity planning for products and services. Process selection and facility layout. Work design and measurement. Management of quality and quality control. Inventory management. JIT and lean operations. Supply chain management. Location planning and analysis.

Requirements for the student: compulsory participation in seminars (min. 50%). Assessment: seminar paper (30% of assessment) and its defense (10% of assessment), final combined exam (60% of assessment).
