- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce students to the status and importance of tourism in the international arena. Attention will also be paid to the basic terminology and measurement methods of international tourism statistics, international organizations and private actors in international tourism, the regional distribution of international tourism, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the role of international tourism in the European context.
- Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the course, students will be able to define the basic concepts related to international tourism and explain different approaches to evaluating the significance of tourism in the global economy. They will be able to explain the role of tourism in the world economy and in international economic relations and interpret quantitative assessments of the position of tourism within the global economy. Students will be able to define and evaluate the statistical monitoring of international tourism, interpret statistical data produced by selected institutions, and identify the basic indicators of tourism statistics in the Czech Republic. Furthermore, students will be able to analyse the development of international tourism and describe the regional and subregional distribution of international tourism according to UNWTO classifications. They will be able to evaluate the role of Europe as the dominant region of world tourism. Students will be able to compare tangible and intangible UNESCO heritage on selected examples and explain the reasons for the establishment of the World Heritage List. They will be able to identify selected UNESCO sites in destinations in Europe and around the world and evaluate their significance for international tourism. In addition, students will be able to classify international tourism organisations and identify both intergovernmental and non-governmental international tourism organisations. Students will be able to define sustainable tourism and evaluate its significance. They will be able to compare selected tourism activities related to sustainable gastronomy, regional products, sustainable accommodation, experiences, and events using selected examples. They will also be able to analyse the environmental impacts of selected tourism activities. Furthermore, students will be able to briefly explain the European Union’s sustainable development strategy and justify the establishment of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. Finally, students will be able to analyse the historical development of tourism in an integrated Europe and interpret the objectives of the European Commission for selected decades.
